  1. Review by Andrew Evans

Mal knocked another one out of the park for me. He has a solid sense of what I'm after by now, combined with his well-established mastery of the genre, so there is little I need to tell him - it's always brilliant. He patiently accommodated my fiddling with the mix for extra points :) Always a joy, and I've already got more projects in mind with him...

Just finished a third project with Mal - he's a joy to work with and consistently exceeds (my already high) expectations. Both his creative sense and his technical skills are impeccable and a perfect fit for the work we've done. Always easy and enjoyable to communicate with. I truly look forward to the next one!

Just completed my second project with Mal - this time a full track production. A joy to work with - Mal's deep experience shines through, and he practically read my mind stylistically, so this project was butter-smooth. Also appreciate that he was very accommodating of my specific deliverable requests which really helps us out. I can't recommend Mal enough, look forward to more projects with him in the future...

Mal is really great to work with. His deep industry experience, professional advice and ear were invaluable for this project. He was extremely communicative and professional, and we even wrapped up ahead of schedule. Already discussing the next project!

Interview with Malcolm Holmes

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Listen, don't look. Have a screen set on your DAW where you can just listen. Rely on your first instincts.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I mainly mix, produce, and play & program drums for remote clients.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: Purpose built mix room. Quested S7s, KRK Sub, Ns10's, Quad Amp, 8 Core Mac Pro, Logic Pro X, Waves, NI, UA, Slate plugins, Audient AD/DA, Vintage Maker Summing, Live Drum Overdubs if necessary.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: Listen to the client - Mix the song.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Polish, definition and clarity.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My ears.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Pop, Punk, Ambient, 80's Electronic. I'm not your hip hop dance guy.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Anyone with a great song.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Creative but ever detail matters.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: 35 years. I started playing drums at the age of 16. My 1st top twenty record was when I was 20. Since then I performed as drummer on a massive catalog of hits records from legendary UK electronic pop group OMD. 40 million record sales and top 10 albums and singles all over the world. In 2013 I stopped playing live drums on the road for OMD. In 2018 I started to develop my career as a writer and producer, built my studio and now mix and play drums on remote sessions for clients.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  23. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  24. A: Can you give me a deal on the price ? A: Yeah ....... Let's speak.

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: A great mix is all you need for a hit record. A hit record is only a hit record when it's a great song and people get to hear it. You need to get your song out there once it's mixed and finished. There's no 'hit record' button on a mixing desk.

  27. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  28. A: I will work with you until you get what you requested.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Both analog and digital for mixes, don't mind as long as the result is great.

  31. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  32. A: Abi Hercules for vocals, lyrics and top line.

  33. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: The whole shebang.

  39. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  40. A: Can you do a deal on the price ? A. Lets speak ...
