Kevin Stokley

Award Winning Mix Engineer

Kevin Stokley on SoundBetter

I am a professional mix engineer with over 17 years of experience doing what I love. Specializing in Rock, Country, Pop and Contemporary Christian genres, I would consider it a privilege to work on your next project!

I've worked with some of the most talented musicians on the planet, known and unknown from every genre, including Jimmie Allen, Dolan, John Marlin (Granger Smith), Kyle Whalum (Kelly Clarkson), Hubert Payne (Little Big Town), Clint Wells (Matthew Mayfield), Brandon Autry (Chase Rice), Andy Gibson (Tanya Tucker), Chad Melchert (Gord Bamford) and many more. During those sessions, it was only about one thing - the song. Fans don't really know how a mix happens but they do know when it sounds PRO. That's my job. And I'm ready to help you take your mix to the next level.

Music takes time to perfect, and I want you to listen two years from now and say, "That's the best mix I've ever had, hands down!". This covers a professional mix in 24-bit WAV format, minor track tuning/timing adjustments, drum trigger replacement, analog and plugin processing.

Shoot me a message - we'll work together to deliver you the best mix imaginable.

Interview with Kevin Stokley

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I truly love music. The people I've worked with are insanely talented, yet humble. Being an artist myself, I find joy in taking a simple idea written on an instrument and turning the whole thing into a production.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: I get asked a lot if I can fix something totally out of my control. There is a crazy amount of things I can do to make your mix line up with prior expectations, but sometimes it's better to just go back and re-track the mistake. Many times, performing too much editing can take the life out of a performance.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: I like to get my rhythm section in order first. After that, time to have fun!

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Any musician or songwriter that loves music. It's not about clout chasing, but the opportunity to work together and create something amazing.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Perfect the performance first, then press Record. Don't depend on the mix to fix it.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Patience. It's a necessity when making sure your customer is happy. It's not always easy to understand where someone is coming from, especially thousands of miles away. Maybe they know exactly what they want to hear in their head, but it's not translating into words. I can decipher that pretty well.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I like to know where the client is coming from. What are their musical influences? Where does their vision for the mix sit? If I know this ahead of time, it gives me the ability to deliver the perfect mix - the first time.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work in Studio One these days, which I feel gives me easy access to what I want to do in the moment. I mix entirely "in the box" as opposed to using analog gear that I've since traded in! Everything from UAD to Slate, and of course Waves.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I enjoy both simple productions from the 1970's Singer/Songwriter era and today's music that involves doubling up on every track to make the song sound fuller. Dave Pensado is a huge influence, because he follows his instinct and doesn't overthink the mixing process. I like to let my actions be guided by the emotion I receive from the song.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I work with all different types of musicians in various situations, but my main focus is Mixing and Post Production Editing.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Make sure you are comfortable with who you're working with. Just like any service, I need to know what your vision is for the project. Communication is everything. Secondly, make sure the audio engineer is willing to spend time on your project and not treat it like another payday.
