Interview with Dion White Music

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: These days I stay busy by creating some heavy music records for myself and various clients from around the world. Visit dionwhitemusic.com for more info and content.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: A big misconception about music recording and songwriting is that it's simple. However, there is often a lot of planning, set up, and arrangements done before hand. There's a method to the madness.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What genre + style do you want? What do you want me to write about? What is the performers musical ability (vocal range, tone of voice, delivery speed etc.)? What is your deadline? How explicit do you want your content to be?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Just do it. Experience is the best teacher. Keep your vision and instructions simple. Those projects always turn out the best.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I began my music career producing beats after my mother gave me my first keyboard at age 11. I had a small old tape recorder at the time that I would experiment with. By the time I was 15 I started investing in basic recording equipment by working summer jobs and internships. In January of 2014 I built up the courage to release my first music project publicly. That opened up the door to work with a handful of others on music. I've been eagerly learning and improving ever since.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: My style is all over the place. I grew up listening to many unique artists and learned to appreciate different things about them. I lean towards soulful and dynamic tracks in general though.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: The best tip I can share is "get to the point". Make it easy for listeners to understand your song's purpose or message. Focus on what matters by leaving the unnecessary filler material behind.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I establish the mood and gather words that contribute to the overall theme. I then find melodies to match the energy and flow of the song. I always stuff each line with "attention grabbers" where I can. The most important thing I do with my songs is make sure every line counts and isn't wasted space.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: The most common work I do for clients is hooks. I've always had a knack for them even before I realized it. I think clients notice this too.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: To give you my all. Every time.
