Interview with Rod Vicente

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m particularly proud of is my work producing a large catalog of music for the licensing platform Hooksounds. Over the years I composed and produced hundreds of tracks covering different styles for commercial media use. My role involved the entire creative process — from the initial musical concept and composition to arrangement, performance, programming and final production. What makes this project especially meaningful to me is the scale and versatility it required. It pushed me to consistently create high-quality music across many genres while maintaining a strong production standard suitable for international media and licensing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I’m working on several music production and composition projects, including tracks for artists as well as new material for licensing and media use. I’m also continuously developing new productions and expanding my catalog across different styles, focusing on modern, cinematic and commercial music.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't currently have specific collaborators on SoundBetter, but I know the platform hosts many highly skilled professionals. If a project requires a specific expertise outside my scope, I’m always happy to recommend other talented specialists who can best serve the client’s needs.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I love analog for the character and sonic texture it brings to a recording. At the same time, digital tools and modern DAWs provide incredible flexibility for editing, sound design and production workflow. Combining both approaches allows me to capture the musical warmth of analog while taking advantage of the speed and precision of digital production.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to treat every project with the same level of care, professionalism and musical attention I would give to my own work. I focus on understanding the artistic vision of the client and delivering productions that are musically strong, emotionally effective and technically polished. Clear communication, reliability and respect for the song are always my priorities.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I enjoy the most is transforming an idea into a finished piece of music. It’s always fascinating to start with a simple concept — a melody, a rhythm or a musical mood — and gradually shape it into a complete production. I also really enjoy the creative collaboration with artists and clients, helping them bring their musical vision to life and seeing how a song evolves throughout the production process.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: One of the most common questions clients ask is how long a production usually takes and how the collaboration process works. My answer is that every project is different, but I usually start by understanding the artistic vision, references and goals of the track. Once the direction is clear, I build the production step by step and keep the client involved with updates and feedback along the way. Clear communication and a defined creative direction usually make the process smooth and efficient, leading to a strong final result.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that music production is mainly about using software or plugins. In reality, the most important part is musical vision — understanding composition, arrangement, dynamics and how all the elements of a song work together. Technology is just a tool. What really shapes a production is the musical decisions behind it, from the structure of the song to the emotional impact of the arrangement.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually start by asking about the overall vision of the project — the style, emotional direction and any reference tracks they have in mind. I also like to understand the role the music should play: whether it's for an artist release, media production or licensing use. From there we can define the arrangement, production style and sonic direction. Finally, I ask about timeline, expectations and any specific details that are important for the client, so we can ensure a smooth and efficient collaboration.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Try to share a clear vision of the project from the beginning — references, mood, style and what you want the music to communicate. This helps the producer understand your direction and achieve the best result more quickly. It’s also important to choose someone whose musical style and previous work resonate with your project. When there is a strong creative connection, the collaboration becomes much more natural and the final result is usually much stronger.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A powerful laptop with my production software and sound libraries, a good audio interface, a pair of reliable headphones, a MIDI keyboard and an acoustic guitar. With that setup I could still compose, produce and record music anywhere.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started working in music production in 1998, when I was 18 years old. From the beginning I focused on composition, arrangement and full music production. Over the years I’ve worked with artists, record labels, advertising companies and music licensing platforms, producing and composing thousands of tracks across different styles and formats. Throughout my career I’ve developed a strong background in music theory, arrangement and modern production techniques, allowing me to work both creatively and efficiently in a wide variety of musical contexts. Today I continue producing music for artists and media projects, as well as creating large music catalogs for licensing and commercial use.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style combines strong musical composition with modern production techniques. I focus on creating music that is emotionally expressive, well-structured and sonically polished. I enjoy blending different musical influences — from classical harmony and jazz sensibility to modern electronic and cinematic production — always aiming to serve the song and its emotional message. The result is music that feels both musical and contemporary, with careful attention to arrangement, sound design and overall impact.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Stevie Wonder. His music combines incredible songwriting, harmony and groove with a deep emotional message. He has always been a huge inspiration to me because of the way he blends musical sophistication with accessibility. Working on a project with that level of musicality and creativity would be an amazing experience.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always make sure the song works with the simplest arrangement first. If the melody, harmony and rhythm are strong with just a few elements, the production will naturally grow in the right direction. Many productions become overcrowded because people try to fix weak musical ideas with more layers. Starting with a solid musical foundation usually leads to a clearer, more powerful final track.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work across a wide range of styles depending on the project. Most of my work is focused on modern pop, electronic and cinematic music, as well as instrumental productions for media and licensing. I also have extensive experience with rock, ambient and hybrid orchestral productions. Because of my background in composition and arrangement, I’m comfortable adapting to different musical directions while maintaining a strong production identity.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: What’s your strongest skill? My strongest skill is translating musical ideas into complete, well-structured productions. I have a strong background in music theory, arrangement and sound design, which allows me to quickly develop a clear musical direction and turn concepts into polished tracks. I’m particularly focused on creating productions where every element — harmony, rhythm, instrumentation and sound texture — works together to support the emotion and identity of the song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a strong musical vision combined with over 20 years of production experience. My goal is always to understand the emotional core of the song and build a production that enhances its message and impact. I focus on arrangement, sound selection and musical dynamics to make sure every element serves the song. Whether it's a subtle production or a more complex arrangement, I aim to create music that feels natural, expressive and professionally polished. Because of my background in composition, orchestration and modern production, I’m able to quickly translate ideas into a cohesive and compelling final track.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My workflow usually starts with understanding the client’s vision, references and the emotional direction of the project. Clear communication at this stage helps define the style, arrangement and overall production approach. Once the concept is defined, I begin building the production — developing the harmonic structure, instrumentation and sound palette. I focus on creating a strong musical foundation before moving into detailed production and arrangement. After the main production is completed, I refine the track with editing, mixing and final production polish to ensure it reaches professional, broadcast-ready quality. Clients are involved throughout the process and can provide feedback at key stages, allowing the project to evolve smoothly and efficiently until the final delivery.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is built around a powerful production computer running professional DAW and a large collection of high-end virtual instruments and sample libraries, including orchestral strings, brass and cinematic percussion. I work with a wide range of top-quality instruments, including Martin and Taylor acoustic guitars (6 and 12 string), Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster electric guitars, and a Fender Jazz Bass. For recording I use professional microphones from Neumann and AKG, along with high-quality valve preamps and compressors. The monitoring environment is based on Focal studio monitors and a Focusrite audio interface, ensuring accurate listening and reliable production results. This setup allows me to produce music that is fully broadcast-ready and suitable for commercial release, media and licensing projects.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: The The Beatles are almost a musical religion to me, but I’m inspired by a wide range of artists across different genres and eras. Some of the musicians and producers who have had a strong influence on me include Johann Sebastian Bach, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Djavan, Bill Evans, Astor Piazzolla and Quincy Jones. I’m also deeply influenced by more modern artists and producers such as Nirvana, Deadmau5, Daft Punk and Tears for Fears. I enjoy learning from very different musical languages — from classical composition and jazz harmony to modern production and electronic music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually work on full music productions, arrangements and musical concept development for artists, record labels, advertising agencies and stock-audio companies. My work often includes building the overall musical direction of a track, designing and programming beats and loops, arranging the instrumentation and performing many of the instruments myself, including guitars, bass, keyboards and backing vocals. I’ve been doing this professionally since 1998, developing productions from the initial idea all the way to a finished, broadcast-ready track.
