Session Cellist, Audio Editor

Jonathan Gerstner on SoundBetter

I have over 10 years of experience playing the cello solo and in many orchestras, doing professional recordings with them as well as solo recordings at home. If you feel like your song needs a beautiful cello part in your song, whether it is for a solo or just to add a certain mood with a cello ensemble in the background, feel free to message me!

[DELETED ACCOUNT]

My idea is to provide HQ recordings of my acoustic cello in order to achieve the best result you could have expected for your song, all this for a very low price since my goal is to gain very much experience in this field. In addition to that, I can also propose some vocal comping, which is a skill that I have learned by working as a mixing engineer for a rap-duo.
My prices are flexible but I usually do around 20.- per song or part of the song as long as it does not exceed 180 seconds (all voices put together). This means that either you get ~4 bars of around 8 cello tracks (in 4/4, 120 bpm) or 30 bars of one solo voice... That's all up to you and your song. :)

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Jonathan Gerstner

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I would directly go analog if I had the money for it... But I don't so I do everything with the gear that I have. :)

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: The moment when the customer is satisfied with the end product... :)

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Hmmm, that's a tough one... I would say give the provider as much information you have about the song as possible. The more you give him, the better the end result will be because he can think about the best way to add something special to your project

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My cello, I don't even need any other gear to be happy ;) (if this could be considered gear...)

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been playing the cello for over 10 years, studying at the Conservatory followed by the Pre-College of the Music Schol. But this kind of session work began around 2 years ago, for pleasure in the first place :)

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: 2Cellos, because they are my idols

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I'm sure you heard this one: don't rely on mixing too much! If the recording is bad, there's nothing to do in the mix...

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Mainly pop music, but it happens that I do rock, hip-hop and classical

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Cello, of course... But my mixing skills are coming slowly but surely... ;)

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I try to add as precisely as possible the mood that you ask for when you provide the necessary files. It can be more sad, nostalgic or romantic mood with for example an "orchestral" string accompaniment but it could also be something more energetic, rockish. In this case, I might use one or several amp plug-ins if you ask for it.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: In case you gave me a melody/chord progression to play: - I listen/look at the file you provided - Practice the part for about 20 minutes - Open the DAW and proceed to the recording of my cello - I usually do around 4 takes of each voice and keep the 2 best In case I do the arrangement: - I'll listen to the rough mix you provided, as well as determining the BPM and the chords of the part that you want me to play on - Then it's the same as in the other situation :)

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Microphone: Rode NT-1A (true magical microphone, it works for nearly everything) Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Headphones: AKG Pro K702 DAW: Reaper Professional

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: 2Cellos for showing the many possibilities on the cello (to a very large audience as well)

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Accompaniment of any song, mainly pop with or without the sheet or audio file of the buyer. (I can make an arrangement for an own accompaniment if you need it
