Interview with Midas Mixing & Mastering
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by creatives who continue to push the boundaries, including, but not limited to the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, Prince, Outkast and Kanye West.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your vision, and what emotion do you want your song to convey?
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my experience, not only as an engineer, but as a music connoisseur. I also bring an attentive, fresh set of ears, and depending on the client's direction, a creative mind.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to the song and communicating with the client in regards to his or her vision for the song. I then do an in-depth analysis and take extensive notes, after which I begin my process, starting with the necessary editing, vocal comping, and vocal tuning. Depending on the song, I generally start by mixing the drums and vocals, followed by the remaining instruments. I then make the appropriate adjustments until everything sits just right.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication and attention to detail.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My primary genres are hip-hop, soul and R&B, but I have worked extensively on everything from folk and jazz to psychedelic pop.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and Mastering.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will give your project my full attention and care.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I received my diploma in audio engineering in 2003.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If it feels right, it is... sort of.
