Interview with Rain Martin
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was the main producer of Ten Avatars collaborating with my best friend (a renowned Epic music composer)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Own Telepopmusik-style production, a full production for a Rock group and Ghost Producer for a DJ.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Best analog gear to capture acoustic sounds, then everything digital with maximum quality processing.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Like which song do you wanna sound? For when do you need it? Do you have any ideas you want to add to it?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: To show me as much accurate as possible references of what they want to achieve. The more specific, the quicker the result will be (there are limitless possibilities with every aspect of music)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A computer with DAW A satellite transmitter to upload music. A piano-weighted 88-keys keyboard An AVID controller and a ground-coffee machine!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After as a child playing small keyboards with follow-along songs over 30 years ago, began making music with a Korg Workstation, then jumped into computer software and "the studio" began its growth. The studio never stops growing (in quality rather than size!)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like contrasts. Sometimes dark Downtempo with a huge beat, other times a party-style EDM song with a beautiful harmonic arrangement.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: any talented Pop singer-songwriter would be a real pleasure to work with.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Keep it simple (a brain-engaging harmony is more effective than a boring full ensemble)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic in the widest sense (from EDM to Downtempo or Chillout)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: As a multidisciplinary guy, I like to exercise myself on every aspect (composition, production, engineering, artistic direction, playing instruments...) Maybe sound editing is the skill I work faster on.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I don't like to be predictive, so I try to add something special to every song. Also I like to introduce continuous subtle variations to keep listeners' brains engaged!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin with a MIDI session for idea brainstorming, then I work on some section of the song, following with arranging the whole structure. After the song sounds satisfactory, I transfer the session to a mixing template. Then magic happens! When it sounds great, then the mastering process begins, for a radio-ready HQ master for publishing.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use different software according to the task (MIDI production, mixing or mastering). I use a 12-core Mac Pro with a huge array of Virtual Instruments and samples. I also record acoustic instruments. All audio is handled with a RME Fireface 802. The control room is acoustically designed by Acústica Integral and each monitoring device has a calibrated sound profile for seamless translation of mixes to any music player. There's also a 50-inch screen for mixer and video display.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Royksopp, Telepopmusik, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Goldfrapp, Caro Emerald, Max Martin, Elsiane, Bjork, Olafur Arnalds...
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Ghost producer, recording+mixing+mastering for groups and soundtrack for videos.
