Interview with Still Matthews

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Our work primarily focuses on mastering, but we've got experience in every facet of the recording process. Since mastering engineers are the final ears on your product, we find it very helpful to know a lot about mastering and a little about everything else.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Mastering an alternative record for a local Nashville artist I love.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Our mastering chain is typically 100% analog, but the rest of our process takes advantage of a hybrid workflow.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Adam Audio A77x Audio Monitors, Antelope Pure2, Manley Massive Passive, Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor and the BetterMaker DarthLimiter.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What inspired you to make this song? How can I help convey your inspiration in post production? Do you have any more ideas that you might not have been able to accomplish in the studio yet?

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Most of our work is in Hip Hop, Pop, Country, Rock and R&B.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: We've got an impressive hybrid workflow and work out of a custom built private studio professionally designed and tuned by Niles Acoustics & Design, LLC.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Vocal chains! But seriously though... we take pride in your vocals and the techniques and tricks we have to produce and mix them. Whether we're giving you input in the studio during tracking or searching for just the right compressor for your sound, we're always looking for a way to make you sound your best!

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: We have a combined thirty years experience producing, mixing and mastering, but we've both been making music a lot longer than that!

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Fairchild 670.
