Interview with Still Matthews
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Wrapping up some final mixes for an awesome country rock duo out of Mobile, Alabama.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital most days. We like the flexibility, the clarity and the presence we are able to achieve with digital. If you don't love a particular element of a vocal chain or effect, it takes considerably less effort to make an adjustment to the sound you like. However, often we find ourselves using analog for some finishing touches during mastering.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What inspired you to make this song? How can I help convey your inspiration in post production? Do you have any more ideas that you might not have been able to accomplish in the studio yet?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: UAD Apollo Twin Quad, Shure SM7B, Nord Stage 3 and my MacBook with all my favorite plugins. If I could only choose one plugin, I would choose the UAD Fairchild 670. It's the glue period.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: We have a combined thirty years experience producing, mixing and mastering, but we've both been making music a lot longer than that!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Fairchild 670.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of our work is in Hip Hop, Trap, Pop, Country and R&B.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal chains! But seriously though... we take pride in your vocals and the techniques and tricks we have to produce and mix them. Whether we're giving you input in the studio during tracking or searching for just the right compressor for your sound, we're always looking for a way to make you sound your best!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Our studio is our happy place.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Our most recent work focuses on full scale production from the moment an artist first steps into the studio to delivering the a final master to the client. We are hands on and currently work weekly with our roster of recurring clients. Some days we might be engineering vocals in Studio A and other days might allow us to try a new Mix Bus techniques.
