Alex is a great mixing/mastering master! I've sent my song to almost 30 different masters from Netherlands on SoundBetter - and asked them to send me their works - and songs of Alex were most pumpy and dancy from all of them!

Alex made 4 versions of mix for me quite quickly and was very careful with my feedback. I'm very happy with overall result! It sounds juicy and the bass line is awesomeeee. He is the magician:)

I will definitely ask him for mixing my songs again!

Interview with Alex Epskamp

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently, I’m passionately focused on building and expanding my portfolio. This involves not only honing my technical skills in mixing, mastering, and composing, but also creatively experimenting with various styles and genres. Each project I undertake is a step towards refining my craft and adding a unique piece to my collection of work. This phase is all about growth, exploration, and pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression to not only showcase my versatility but also to discover new dimensions in my musical journey.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: While I may not have a specific recommendation, there’s an abundance of incredible talent out there. Like I mentioned earlier, I encourage you to explore a variety of portfolios and focus not just on the quantity of reviews, but on the quality and uniqueness of each artist’s work. You might be pleasantly surprised by the hidden gems you discover.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: When it comes to the analog vs. digital debate, I have a deep affection for analog. There’s something magical about the warmth and character that analog gear imparts on sound. It brings a certain life and depth to music that’s hard to replicate. However, I also recognize and appreciate the incredible precision and flexibility that digital offers. The ability to do surgical adjustments and experiment without limitations is a game-changer. So, in my work, I embrace the best of both worlds. By blending the rich, organic tones of analog with the limitless possibilities of digital, I aim to achieve a sound that’s not just technically proficient, but also emotionally resonant and unique.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Many revisions guaranteed – if not, I’ll owe you dinner! Consider it my ‘fine dining’ backup plan for not getting your mix just right on the first go!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I cherish most about my work in mixing, mastering, and composing is the opportunity to be a part of the creative process, bringing an artist’s vision to life. Each project is a journey into a new world of sounds and emotions. I love the challenge of blending technical skill with creative intuition to enhance and elevate a piece of music. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the transformation from a raw recording to a polished, emotive final product. Additionally, collaborating with diverse artists and being exposed to various musical styles continuously broadens my horizons and fuels my passion for music and sound engineering.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about my work in mixing, mastering, and composing is that it’s a simple, straightforward process of just tweaking levels or adding effects. In reality, it’s much more nuanced and artistic. It involves deeply understanding the vision and emotion behind a piece of music, and then using technical skills to bring that vision to life. Each project is a unique puzzle, requiring a delicate balance between the science of sound and the art of expression. It’s not just about making music ‘louder’ or ‘clearer,’ but about enhancing and transforming it into a polished, cohesive piece that resonates with the intended audience.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: 1. What is the primary emotion or message you want to convey through your song? 2. Are there any specific artists or songs that have inspired the sound you're aiming for? 3. Can you describe the overall sound or vibe you're envisioning for your track? 4. Do you have any specific preferences or requirements for the mixing and mastering process? 5. How do you envision the final composition? Are there particular instruments or elements you want to highlight? 6. What is your intended audience and where do you plan to release the track? 7. Are there any deadlines or time constraints I should be aware of for this project? 8. Do you have any concerns or challenges you've faced with past mixes or compositions that you want to avoid? 9. What format and quality of files will you provide for mixing and mastering? 10. Is there any other specific feedback or guidance you can offer to help me better align with your artistic vision?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: It's important to remember that while some artists may not have amassed hundreds of reviews, their talent can be exceptional. Taking the time to explore their portfolios can often reveal hidden gems of quality. Unfortunately, algorithms tend to favor more established names, but diligent searching can uncover truly talented individuals whose work speaks for itself.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My macbook ofcourse, guitar, interface, microphone and good studio headphones

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: It all started at an early age. I became interested in producing music when I was twelve. I started off with Deep House, Dance, and Electronic Music. I discovered that making Electronic Dance Music opened up a creative component in me. I often hear melodies and sounds. Or a certain rhythm. I also know that I often hear things in music that others miss. When I started producing, it meant to me that it was possible to create a song, sound, or melody that until then only existed in my head. I just loved it. I explored the possibilities, started using more professional software and learned how to improve components and individual parts.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Search on spotify the playlist: Anti Pop

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I'm deeply inspired by brakence's work; his emotional depth and technical prowess in composition and sound design are truly remarkable. His unique sound resonates with me, and it would be an incredible opportunity to collaborate with such a talented artist on a song.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: When diving into music production, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, especially when the ideas in your head seem too grand to be captured quickly. Remember, great music often takes time to evolve. Give yourself the permission to explore your creativity without rushing. Don't get too caught up in trying to mimic the style of other artists. Instead, focus on letting your own unique sound and ideas flow naturally. Sometimes, the best creations come from moments when you simply let go and create without overthinking. Trust in your process and give your ideas the time and space they need to fully develop.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: in my past I worked a lot on EDM and loads of sub-genres in that field but now mainly pop music.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I approach each project with a mindset of enhancing and refining, not overpowering. This means I focus on polishing and elevating your music while keeping it authentically yours. Whether it's subtle touches in the mix or carefully crafted production elements, my goal is to bring out the best in your music without losing sight of your unique artistic identity. In essence, I'm here to amplify your vision, not to replace it with mine unless that is what my client wants.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: What I bring to a song is a fusion of technical expertise and creative intuition, honed over 10+ years of experience in the music industry. As a producer, mixer, and master from Amsterdam, with a strong foundation from the Conservatory of Amsterdam, I blend artistic flair with meticulous attention to detail. My approach is deeply collaborative, ensuring that each song I work on not only sounds polished and professional but also resonates with the unique style and emotion of the artist. Whether it’s enhancing the depth and power in a mix or capturing the right vibe in production, I strive to elevate each track to its fullest potential. In every project, I bring a passion for music that goes beyond the technicalities. It's about creating a sound that’s not just heard, but felt – a sound that truly embodies the artist’s vision and connects with listeners on a deeper level.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Each project I embark on is a unique journey, and my approach is tailored to bring out the best in your music. When it comes to mixing, I start by immersing myself in your song, really getting a feel for its essence. I also listen to your reference tracks to understand the sound you're aiming for. This initial listening phase is crucial – it's where I tune into your vision. Then, I meticulously organize and clean up the tracks, setting the perfect stage for the mixing process. In producing, it's all about capturing the right vibe. I take the time to understand your goals and the emotion you want to convey. From there, I let creativity lead the way, crafting sounds and melodies that align with your vision. It's a collaborative process, one where your ideas and aspirations are the guiding stars. In both mixing and producing, my goal is to create a space where your ideas can flourish, transforming them into a piece of music that not only sounds professional but also deeply resonates with you and your audience.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: so, I have Yamaha HS8 studio monitor setup (changeable to dynaudio studio monitors) with two microphones, the Shure sm7b and the Rode nt2-a condenser mic, I use the audient ID14 interface and I have a Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard in front of me.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I love a lot of big names out there like The Kid LAROI, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Harry Styles and they really inspire me but over the last two years I have also fallen in love with more underground artists like glaive, ericdoa and brakence, they really inspire me! Also Dominic Fike is a huge inspiration!

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: In my work, I mainly focus on mixing and producing, and it's always about connecting with the heart of each track. Many clients come to me asking, 'How can I make my track sound more powerful?' or 'Why doesn't my track have that big sound?' I love diving into these questions, working closely with my clients to really bring out the depth and emotion in their music, transforming their tracks into something that not only sounds professional but also truly resonates while also explaining to them why these situations in music can happen.
