Coco Scott has a deep understanding of the importance of a solid, quality and crystal clear up-front vocal. She has a superb ear to know exactly the right effects, if any are needed, for a given song. To put the vocal front and center where it should be is a skill that requires careful attention to every detail of how that is accomplished.

This is something that comes from having a great ear and being a great listener. The late producer for The Beatles, George Martin, wrote 'All You Need is Ears' because it is true. Scott has the magical musical ears & skills.

Coco Scott is meticulous. Her arrangements are cleanly tracked, subtly spare, with groove from here to over there. And those vocals! Breathy and intimate, consistent and poppy, they seem timeless. A true pro.

Interview with Coco Scott

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: How much would it cost to _____? It depends because no two projects are the same--even for the same artist.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That it's easy--that anyone can do it.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: From things like vibe and turnaround time to getting to the heart of it by asking 'Do you love your song? Is it your best work? What is your favourite part of the song?' and so on.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Remember that done is better than perfect. Sometimes it's the 'mistakes' that tell the story the best, and the song is nothing without a story. So let it be real and authentic.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Exactly what I have--reliable, efficient, no fuss gear that works anytime and anywhere.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I left a very successful corporate career with Porsche to pursue my dream of making music 5 years ago. I went from being a backup singer, to songwriting, to producing and mastering my own music, to where I am now.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Vocals first, everything else second.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: John Mayer. I'd love to record all his guitar parts and then all his vocal parts and stitch together something unexpected but still true to John Mayer.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Perfect doesn't always tell the best story. Be authentic in delivering the message of the song, and work everything else around that central message.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Pop, acoustic pop, and singer-songwriter.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Vocal processing.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring honesty to a song--a story--with haunting lead/backing vocals, atypical piano parts, and willingness to push a song beyond its boundaries.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: It differs with each project and flows with inspiration.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My setup is simple, efficient, reliable, and does everything I need it to do.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Cookie Marenco, Austen Jux-Chandler, Greg Wells, Chris Lord-Alge, Pierre Marchand...

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Vocal processing.
