Interview with Ashley Jacobson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of the album I recorded for the producer Brody Brown. I was in the studio everyday, and I say it was like a bootcamp because I really found my flow during those sessions.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on an album in my production duo. It is fun to do your own projects as well.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask for any references and go from there. If there are no references I ask for stems and follow my gut.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If that was the case, I'd bring my laptop, a Telefunken 251, Neve 1073, 1176, and my favorite guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been professionally in music for 10 years. I started at Westlake Recording Studios as an intern and worked my way up to 1st engineer. I have also been playing and writing music since I was about 7.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like to make tunes that get stuck in your head and clean vocals. I strive to bring taste and excitement to tracks.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Lady Gaga, I have been a fan from the beginning and she is so versatile.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Pop and EDM. I love catchy melodies and hard-hitting drums.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is vocal recording, mixing, and editing. That is my bread and butter and how I started professionally in the industry.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a professional and unique sound that fits what individual artists are looking for. Having worked with so many top 40 artists, I know how to make a song sound polished and top of the line.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process starts with understanding the artist's vision. For remixes and productions I work around vocal stems to match what they are looking for. I also like to add extra flavor to give it that professional sound. For mixing and mastering, I keep the intension of the the original song while amping it up and applying tasteful enhancements.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have all of the industry standard DAWs, plugins, and synths I also have more boutique plugins, guitars, and an Apollo interface.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Music production professionals that inspire me include Flume, Disclosure, and many of the Ian Kirkpatrick.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: A lot of what I do is vocal production from recording to the final mix. Additionally, I remix songs in the pop and EDM genres.
