Sandro Enciso on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Sandro, a french independant sound engineer and musician from Paris. My goal? Serve your music and give it the power, punch and clarity that will impact your listeners, driving them into true fans of your art.

I am a music lover for so many years... As a child, it was impossible to stop me when I was starting to sing (out of tune, of course). Music has been an important part of my life, I improved my singing, learned how to play the guitar... I started writing songs, joining bands and playing shows.

Over the years, I discovered that I had a passion for sound engineering and how records were made. I wanted to dig into every part of the process and I managed to make it being my career, for a few years now.

I love the way I am able to work on music. I am constantly learning new sounds, feeding my brain... It is my passion to create music with others. I want to provide excellent communication and I will do all I can to make sure you get exactly what you want for your project.

Talk to me through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you.

We have been working with Sandro on the recording and mixing of our debut 5-tracks EP. We met beforehand and discussed the atmosphere and sound we were aiming at. With some special requests we had in mind for this recording (using real cabs and amplifiers, capturing the room ambience during the sessions...), it was a challenging project overall, mastered by Jack Endino.
Sandro has been incredibly responsive toward all our requests. His hints and suggestions have been more than welcome each time, and the result exceeded our expectations. We would recommend Sandro without the least hesitation.

Sandro accompanied me during the recording of 8 tracks over the summer.

I would like to express my gratitude to Sandro for his remarkable ability to adapt and handle the challenges we met to the best of his abilities.

Sandro expertly managed the guitar recording sessions, project monitoring, and mixing. His technical prowess was evident, and he consistently paid close attention to my requests.

The end result completely met my expectations.

It was an exceptional studio experience that I would gladly repeat, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to others!

Interview with Sandro Enciso

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Trust your first impression feeling ! Of course, you could make mistake but I don't think you have to overthink it. We all learn, everytime :)

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I like the question "what kind of sound do you like ?". It's simple, and it tells a lot about the influence of the artist. Plus, it helps me to get a reference for the mix!

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: First of all, I communicate a lot to get the idea behind the song. Then, I start to isolate myself in the studio, getting in the mood by listening the rough mix a few times. I usually take a break after working on the instrumental part, then another one after adding the vocals. I'll do the automation pass in the end, just after the FX work. Then, I provide the mix to you for revision and I always try to be as quick as possible to apply them then.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: My delivery is a slamming mix, with the punch and impact it deserves. I put my effort in learning all the details of this genre and now, I want to use these knowledge to help you impress your listeners. As music is subjective, I am always open for revisions.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I have a mixing room where I am also able to track guitar, bass and vocals. For these ones, I am using a Kemper, a SM7B (a must-have when your room is not perfect or even for screaming vocals). My studio is built on UAD system, with an Apollo as an interface, and plugins which allow me to introduce some analog feeling into the mix. My favorite one? The 1176 for almost everything in heavy music, and a SSL channel ! I am working on Focal Shape 65 and CLA10A monitors.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: As a singer and guitar player, I am inspired by Matthew Bellamy. I love the way he keeps trying new things and new sounds with a single instrument. I am also a big fan of Linkin Park and Falling in Reverse. For music production professionals, I don't think I am going to be original but hey, they are the best ! So, let's say Andy Wallace and Chris Lord-Alge. For heavy music specifically, I want to mention Jordan Valeriote too.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Being a music lover ! In the end, even with great skills, an experience could be ruined by bad communication, bad understanding of your artistic vision... I am the man in the shadow, I am here to make your song shine, not prove myself.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I like to take time to understand the song and the whole universe around it. That's why I usually love to talk with you guys before starting to mix. I am trying to find what's important in the song and then emphasize it, get the most out of your recording.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Probably a guitar, a computer with an audio interface, headphones and ... maybe a MIDI controller ? Well, it's important to be able to create and work on projects even on a desert island ;)

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started my career by working on live shows. Aside of that, I worked in several studios, learned a lot from some experienced producers.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I like to push things aggressively. I am a "heavy compression" guy, to be honest. But, hey, I specialized in heavy modern music, aggressive action is key !

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Muse, without any doubt. They tried everything, experimented a lot... I honestly love this vision of the "studio life".

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: You won't get the punch you're looking for by adding a lot of layers... Actually, it's the timing and tightness of each tracks, from drums to vocals, who will provide that.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I am specialized in heavy music, from rock to metal. I love big drums, headbanging riffs and epic bass lines.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: I am the lead singer and guitarist of a two-man-band. Our music is a blend between alternative rock, metal, nu metal and some electronic stuff too. I put a lot of energy in this project, we are often playing shows in France. It's important to me to let the artistic and creative part of me be free.

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: I am playing shows in Paris, as well as working in the studio for you, guys !

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Both! Well actually, I am more of a digital user, but using plugins emulations of hardware units... But I love to incorporate analog warmth in the preamp stage. Technologies are evolving so fast, and today, there's nothing bad in mixing totally in the box.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: Relationship is key, as well as music passion. I always do my best to provide the best communication, every details as I can. Of course, I am expecting you to send me high-quality tracks to make the mix easier, but if you have any issue on that, I am here to help. Let me know your project and I'll be able to rightly serve your music !

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: Discovering people and new artistic horizons. Each person has different tastes in music, and find out some that I don't know well is truly exciting !

  39. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  40. A: My work is also my primary passion. I'm totally happy about doing this for a living but as I am also a musician on my own, sometimes it's hard to find the right boundary between work and hobby.

  41. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  42. A: Questions I get asked the most frequently are "How long does it take?" and "How much does it cost?". Well, my standard turnaround time for a mix is usually one (1) or two (2) days but I like to set a deadline within three (3) business days to prevent any work to make your tracks sound like they should. My standard rate is $300 per song for mixing, with a fee of $50 if I have to edit the tracks. But if you have a question different than that, please just ask me. I always love to have an opportunity to work with someone!
