Leon Bailey

Electronic Music Engineer

Leon Bailey on SoundBetter

I am a specialist electronic music engineer and producer based in Bristol (UK) and have worked on projects that have accrued over 200 million streams to date. Credits include: 31 Recordings, Armada Records, Atlantic Records, Bru-C, Crucast, Example, Holy Goof, Spinnin' Records and Skepsis.

I am a self employed music producer, sound designer and studio engineer for both grassroots and professional clients. Over the last twelve years I’ve built a solid client base of artists and organisations, having worked on hundreds of singles, EPs and albums in either a recording, production, mixing or mastering context that have collectively amassed over 200 million streams on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music.

Highlights to date include mixing and mastering Bru-C’s platinum certified single ‘You & I’, creating a five track OST and running associated plant based music workshops for a recent Arts Council funded project entitled ‘Kindred: Our Roots Entwined’ and working on countless records featuring some of the UK’s most renowned dance music artists including Example, Holy Goof, Darkzy, Skepsis and D Double E.

So, why should you hire me? I care deeply about the work that I do, and take great pride in working with you on making your music sound as good as we possibly can. It's harder than ever to stand out in the modern industry, so trusting the finalisation of your music to a seasoned professional such as myself allows you to concentrate on making music, playing shows and promoting your products/content safe in the knowledge that your final mix and master will sound fantastic in the club, on the radio or being streamed online.

Interview with Leon Bailey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked closely with Bru-C on his album "Original Sounds" back in 2019. It was a pleasure to tackle some of the vocal recording and co-produce "Sunrise" alongside taking care all of the mix and mastering. The record turned out very well, and the lead single "You And I" was certified platinum recently too! It was great to work on a project of that nature that helped Bru reach the heights he's at now.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finished some masters for a new DnB EP today, and now getting on with a hip hop sample pack.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I love music as much as you do - and love making your music sound as nice as possible.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been doing jobs for clients for around twelve years now but have been producing and DJing dance music for over twenty years. Used to work as a marketing manager before I started doing audio :)

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Dr. Dre - the way he mixes low end is amazing!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop, Bass Music (UK Garage, Bassline, Bass House) and Rap/Grime/Trap.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: Depends on the job in all honesty! Always happy to answer this question on a one-to-one basis as it applies to each project differently.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: My studio is based in a small business centre in central Bristol with a welcoming vibe alongside fantastic monitoring, a selection of sound design equipment, comprehensive acoustic treatment and all of the licensed software/plugins/VST instruments you could ever need.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Butch Vig, Luca Pretolesi, Nile Rodgers, Dave Pensado, Dr. Dre, Stuart Hawkes.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: It's been a balance between sound design, additional production, mix and master work over the last year.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Both technologies have their uses - digital processing is instantly recallable and can achieve amazing things that would not be possible in the analogue domain whereas analogue kit can bring more vibe to a session in certain circumstances.

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: I really like listening to great music weeks or even months before the general public gets to hear it - real privilege :)

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: That mastering and mixing are the same thing!

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: Again, depends on what job I'm doing at that point. A mix client might be asked about suitable reference material and their aesthetic as an artist, for example.

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: It's always good to shop around - there's lots of talented engineers out there, it's just finding the person you click with the best. Being on a similar vibe to your engineer can really help them to understand exactly what you want whilst perhaps suggesting a few things you hadn't thought of.

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: Virus TI, mic, portable audio interface, Macbook and a pair of monitors (they do have electricity at this island right??)

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: Clean & crisp.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Time delay is your friend!

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: Audio Engineering

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: If I'm involved in the production or writing of a song then I like to bring my own touches to the arrangement - engineering wise though I'm all about making the most of the source material.
