Hi there! I'm a producer/songwriter/mix engineer out of Eugene, OR. My goal is to bring out the best in every song. OPB Music named Jeffrey Martin's “Golden Thread,”one of the best songs of the best songs of 2017, calling it, "rock-solid songcraft...wrapped snugly in warm production that highlights every positive angle."
I began producing projects in 2012 out of the exertion to sustain the nomadic lifestyle of a traveling performer/songwriter. I have always been a songwriter so to me, lyric is king. I try to build songs around the vocal. Everything else is only there to enhance the story, inform the lyric, and provide emotive impact. I often play a lot of instruments on the projects I produce (acoustic and electric gtrs, keys, banjo, etc) and I also have a great resource of musicians who I trust and love to work with (pedal steel, violin, mandolin, drums, etc). Every project is different which means the approach/execution needs to adapt accordingly. I often tell people, imagine you're a painter working on a 12 ft x 12 ft canvas and you only have the ability to stand 6 inches away at any given time. This is what it feels like when you are recording songs. As a producer I am able to stand back and see the project through a much more objective scope.

Tyler took my very basic sketch of a song and made it into a pro quality recording. He was very patient and easy to work with, and most importantly, had the skills to make everything sound great.

My experience with Tyler exceeded all expectations. We took two rough demos and made them into radio ready mixes. Tyler takes the time before the project starts to really make sure there is a shared vision into how to produce and mix the song, which goes a long way in ensuring the end result is what you want. He has a great sense of EQing, compression, panning, and depth, all of which help bring a song to life. He is a talented multi-instrumentalist, adding many instruments to my two songs.
Tyler has mixed a few songs for me and has a wonderful ear & makes incredibly musical choices. Kind hearted guy on top of it all. Highly recommended to bring your recordings to life!!!
Working with Tyler has been one of the recent highlights of my career. Working together on the Beth Wood record I discovered a very talented, creative force in the singer songwriter/Americana world. His sense of space and openess in production is refreshing and he seems to find just the right voices (instruments) needed for each song in order to tell the right story. He is 70's Americana incarnate and he's an old crow gal!
I've worked with Tyler on numerous songs, including The Grave, Rain, and The Cycle and he has an ear for exactly what the song needs. Couldn't be more happy with the results and look forward to working with him again many times in the future!
I have worked with Tyler as engineer, songwriter, and performer a ton on electric and upright bass over the last 5 years and always been happy with his work. From the first email to the final mix, he always goes above and beyond to make the experience a great one and to bring out the best in every artist he works with.
I have been working with Tyler professionally since the early 00's. He is a fantastic songwriter and producer. I have had the pleasure of mastering a lot of his current projects as producer/engineer, and his work is top shelf. Solidly professional, honest and personable, he is one of my favorite clients, and a good friend as well. You can't go wrong with his services.
Tyler has been producing amazing music and high quality recordings for as long as I've known him. He's a talented live performer himself, so he understands how to get that genuine, soulful sound out of the artists he works with. He's very honest, professional, easy to work with, and meets his deadlines. If you work with Tyler you won't be disappointed!
I've been working as a freelance session player with Tyler for years, and I've always found his production style fresh and inviting. He's able to take the heart of the song and make it shine through, while adding just the right amount of "ear candy" to make you want to listen again and again. He brings great songs to the next level, every time!
Interview with Tyler Fortier
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes. Bryan Daste is my go to pedal steel dude and I work with Erik B a lot when I need mandolin and/or violin. Even if we don't end up working together, check these guys out if you're in need of those things.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you hoping to achieve? What sound are you going for?
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Surround yourself with good, honest, and talented people ;)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on acoustic based music that falls under the Americana umbrella. The last 2 years I've shifted focus and working a lot more in the production or library music realm. Lots of jingly instrumentals. I released an album with Warner Chappell Production Music and Marmoset in 2018. When working with a client though, I really am drawn to the vocal. I love taking an acoustic guitar and vocal track from demo form to a polished, deep and dynamic recording.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think my strongest skill is probably being able to discern what a song needs to bring it over the top and to its best form.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project is a little different. Sometimes I'm working out of a studio with an engineer, sometimes tracks are being sent to me, and sometimes tracking happens at my room in Eugene, OR. I think it all depends on the song and also the artist. Each project starts with a conversation about execution, how they like to work, and how we can best come up with plan to kick ass and take names most effectively.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I've been inspired by Dave Cobb as a producer. I love capturing sounds live (often though I'm working with overdubs for budget reasons, logistical reasons, room set ups, etc). He seems to emphasize the importance of the vocal and makes everything work around that, opposed to the vocal somehow adapting to fit to a certain element of the song. That's how I roll. Or try to anyway.
