Interview with CAMBO MUSIC
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: The new Doja Cat album. The debut EP from Jack Samson, and building my catalog of songs for pitch.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Kimi Liope, Rian Lewis, Louis Bartolini
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you want out of your music first and foremost, and be able to communicate that as best you can. The deeper understanding you have of your musical and creative goals, the better I can assist you on the journey to achieving them.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began as an artist. I toured in a Hip Hop crew for years, and then in a live band as a front man. After signing a publishing deal and moving to LA, I decided to leave the touring grind behind me and focus my creative efforts in the studio, helping other artists achieve their dreams.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust the Process! AND Less is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Urban, R&B, and Pop. I also work with several reggae artists, indie latin, and folk.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a great ear for modern music. Drum programming, synth and sound design, arrangement, and leveling are definitely in my arsenal. I'm also super proficient when it comes to all thing vocals. Recording, editing, comping, pitch correction and melodyne. If you want a great sounding vocal, I'm your guy.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I am an artist-forward producer. So when it comes to creating original and collaborative works, I like to meet and spend time with my clients to better understand the emotion and message intended to be felt in the music. Once we catch a vibe, the process begins. Typically, after a 6-8 hour session, my clients leave with a song that isn't far off from being mix ready.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a super vibey space ideal for producers and writers. My brother and I built it ourselves in 2015. We offer a 250 sq ft live room that features a vintage mahogany Lester Baby Grand Piano, 2 drum kits, 7 guitars, 2 basses, analog synths, perccusion, dozens of mics, etc. The control room feels like a cozy living room in the Sante Fe style, runs off a fully-stacked iMac, with UAD's Apollo 8p, literally every DAW and Plug-In one could want (PT, Logic, Abelton, FL, etc., WAVES Diamond Bundle, Native Instruments, and more). The space is plug and play, and central to all the amenities Hollywood has to offer. Did I mention that the acoustics are superb and the rooms sound amazing!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I offer a one-stop shop for my clients. Original production, songwriting, recording, editing, and mixing. In addition, I offer vocal production services: including pitch correction/melodyne, editing (timing/quantization), vocal comping and more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I aspire to have a career the likes of Rick Ruben, Max Martin, and Quincy Jones. I'm super inspired by modern pop and urban music, but my roots are in Jazz, Hip Hop and Carribean Music.
