Ryan K Brennan on SoundBetter

I am an Australian based engineer and producer, specialising in indie rock and singer songwriter music. Having worked with Julia Jacklin and King Gizzard and the Lizard wizzard in the most recent years.

Both an accomplished Producer and Musician with a high level of versatility. His signature stripped back style has proved him comfortable with a vast array of genres including indie, rock, folk and many others, proving time again that his own style can not be categorised. He holds previous studio experience throughout a range of popular studios in London, England and Sydney, Australia. Ryan spent many years working with producer Tony Buchen, a relationship that still proves strong today as Ryan continues to work with Tony for artists such as Pete Murray, Montaigne, Bob Evans and Spookyland. Other notable artists that Ryan has worked with include producing music for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Julia Jacklin, Georgia Mulligan & Phantastic Ferniture. “I am always looking to hear new music and sounds and work with those people creating them. So please drop me a line, would love to hear from you.”

Interview with Ryan K Brennan

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That I will be able to turn your song into a number 1 hit. I can help craft something special with an artist, but I can not guarantee that means a hit.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What do you want to achieve with the music?

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I began working in the audio industry at 15. I started in live sound and and moved into studio work while continuing to do live event work and tour managing at the same time. I am now coming up to 20 years in this industry.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: friendly and laid back. I always feel like I add something to a track, but it varies depending on what is required.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Serve the song, the song and feeling that song brings to the listener is key.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I work on a lot of different genre's, but predominately work with a lot of singer song writers and indie rock bands.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Listening, listening to the artist to the song.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I aim to turn a song into something that people want to listen to over and over again.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: This changes all the time. I am always focused on how the song feels. Sometimes that means editing and comping tracks, other times it is leaving it with raw edges and creating something that gives the listener an emotion.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I run a small studio in Perth WA, it has room to track a 4 piece band. Running on a UA Apollo system, with PMC monitors and an eclectic collection of outboard equipment and instruments. I can mix in both stereo and more recently have begun working in dolby Atmos.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I mostly mix, produce and record songs, ep and albums for artists. I do a lot of remote drum recording on tracks as well
