Interview with Joe Marsh
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital just because I don't have much access to analogue and way cheaper to use digital software.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always work to a high standard of service working quickly and closely with the client, to produce the best quality of music for their project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A macbook, an electric guitar, Maschine MK3, MIDI keyboard and a huge external hard drive to store all my beats!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: To work as a music producer in a studio environment. I have been producing music for 7/8 years now and I hope to continue for many years to come and push myself as far as I can.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Beat based music with a strong influence from Lo-Fi and Psychedelic styles of music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Flying Lotus because after seeing him live twice I still can't over how unique and cutting edge he sounds. His experimentation with Jazz and world music influenced me to listen to much more music and push myself as a producer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Worry about specific sounds later! Let the ideas flow the minute you start making a song and then you can spend as much time as you want to tweak small details. And be open to all styles of music outside of your own creations, you never know what will influence you unless you try it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-Hop beat music and electronic styles such as House, Techno and Jungle/Breaks. I also produce Indie Rock music with a strong influence from Mac Demarco, Tame Impala and Shame
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Producing a beat quite quickly and arranging tracks.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am interested in a huge range of music and I like to experiment with audio editing resulting in experimental sounds such as stuttering and glitch effects.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I test myself every day with the "against the clock challenge" where I create songs/beats in 15mins or less. This means that I am able to quickly come up with ideas or songs and produce track quickly but with good quality.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic Pro X on my Macbook Pro, with a Maschine MK3 sampler and MIDI keyboard. I also have a Fender Telecaster Guitar and a Bass Guitar.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Flying Lotus, Tyler the Creator, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Ross from Friends, Mac Demarco, DJ Shadow, Lapalux, Massive Attack, J Dilla
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am a prolific producer and beat maker. But I also work in a range of styles of music and so can adapt to the client's needs.
