Interview with Emanuele D'Ugo

Analog or digital and why?
after setting budget for project i choose the best equipment, i try to meet my clients expectation.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
amaca, machete...there are wind and sea for the music....
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
start when i was young, about 6, start mixing sound amp for my father's band 31 years ago, make a lot of experiment in recording audio until 1999, from here i started as professional audio engineer, foh engineers, recording engineer and from 2005 mixing engineer.
How would you describe your style?
loud sound, wide ambient, focused mix
Can you share one music production tip?
always tune your drum! do not use dynamics or eq in audio chain when you are recording
What type of music do you usually work on?
generally i work on classica, hard rock, pop, rap/hip-hop, elettronica
What's your strongest skill?
problem solving, in recording studio, or best when you are live in tour i can solve all audio issue. i'm in bussiness since year 2000, and i've see all.
What do you bring to a song?
all engineers can bring something to your music, ask wath do you want, i can learn and replicate all that we can hear in hours
What's your typical work process?
generally i listen all single tracks, make some editing if necessary, then i go to mix phase, drum before, i set bd, sn, hh, oh, open toms, add bass guitar sound, add string and guitar, put key in, add choir, add vox. for every single track are added dynamics, EQ & FX (the right amount for genre that you play). when done i refine all level to avoid digital master clip, then i attach fader automation and finally mix all level in a stereo track.
Tell us about your studio setup.
dependat from budget, when i do low budget mix i use my ho studio setup (mac, ssl duende, logic pro, pro monitor), for normal budget mix i use Pims Studio (http://www.pims-group.it visit for spec)
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
for classica i think that deutsche grammophon is a reference in audio recording and mixing, im started from here until i'm arrive to metal (bob rock) and pop (alan parson, pink floyd), after a lot of hours spent to listen all musics genres i think to have a good global overview .
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
i can do all phase of audio prod chain, from recording passing for editing and mixing until online publish, plus for serious clients i can offer Foh engineering service.
