Interview with Fabian Brendel
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Chandler Curve Bender, Macbook Pro, UAD Apollo Twin, Manley Variable MU, Kush Clariphonic
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mastering, I know exactly how a track should feel on different setups and that's so important in this electronic music scene!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I got a really basic studio. Optimized with Vicoustic and Addictive Sound Panels. For giving the final touch to my productions i use Tegeler Audio 'Créme'; SPL Qure EQ, Spl vitalizer Mk-2 as my Outboard Gear. Combined with UAD Plugins it's really easy to work both precise and clean but still having this nice analog depth. The studio is also calibrated and measured with Sonarworks Reference 4. As a pair of Speakers I use the awesome Focal Shape 65 together with the Focal Sub 300 P. For corrective hearing I got a pair of Beyerdynamic's Custom One Pro Plus.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly i do the mixdown and mastering. Sometimes i record vocals in my studio for them or help finishing their demos!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: It's Nicky Romero for his production skills and Peter Franco who's edgy mixing techniques just stick out
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First i do the colorcoding and grouping of the stems. Afterwards i start leveling the sounds. It depends of the song but most of the time i start mixing the drums and adding the bass to have a nice basement. When the Instrumental is finished i start with the vocals to put them 'on top' of the production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always aim for clarity and brilliance. I think it's important to have a glued song but still able to hear every element.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly Electronic sounds but did some cool Disco sounds lately with super nice guitars! I love having organic elements in songs. Especially guitars and strings!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always use reference songs!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd like to work with Axel Rudy Pell, his outstanding voice is just amazing! And it would be a challenge to make them even better.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Edgy and clean! I love surgical mixing and being transparent.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm producing music for like 8 years now. I finished Music-School this year with a degree in Audio Engineering. I'm more the engineer type right now but still love making house/pop music!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just ask if they done something similar as you search for and go listen to it!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask for reference songs to be as precise as possible. I ask for special wishes on either clearness or loudness, something the really wanna go for.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The time. Most artists think a song with about 80-100 stems is mixed in a couple of hours, which is wrong! It takes time to first understand the track and hearing what the artist aimed for while producing. And doing a stereo mastering can't fix mixing problems. Never! If certain sounds don't work with each other we can't raise the volume to the area artists search for without hearable quality loss. So always put time in mixing your songs proper or get someone who knows how to! :-)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Really i don't know, i think the most asked question is what day it's finished but that really depends on song and the amount of projects we have at the moment. When I'm answering this question i always say that quality takes time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I'm in my own world, time flies by and it doesn't feel like work. It feels like having fun!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Teamwork makes the dream work! I promise we will reach the goals you aim for and of course i can give tips or recommend professionals who can help out! :-)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for the feels, digital for the precision!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I love working with Aexcit and George Gleeson, Aexcit are so talented producers! George is just an outstanding singer/songwriter. Together we reached more than 200.000 Streams on our songs. Totally recommend!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment i work on the monthly releases of a record label based in Cologne, afterwards i have an attended session with a client who is also interested in mastering and i try to give him some advice on his work.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I mixed a song for a client which was recorded in NYC and the artist came over to bring in his idea and we worked on the mixdown together like he told me his ideas and i worked it out. Afterwards it got mastered in Nashville by the Engineer of EDX and it was really cool to see what he did with the stems i mixed.
