Half Light Recordings on SoundBetter

Full track production, composition and film scoring taking your song from start to finish. Synths, bass, guitars, bg vocals, drums, strings; whatever you need I can make sure your track sounds how you always envisioned. I have over a decade of experience scoring, engineering, producing and mixing.

I am a producer, guitarist and bassist based in Vancouver BC. Spanning genres from folk to rock and pop my production credits include Daniel James McFadyen's ECMA nominated album "Back to the Country", The Matchstick Skeletons "Change The Channel" album, Roki's "Foolish Heart" and "The Fall", Robyn Froese's "Wasp Woman and the Haunting of Heatley" ep.

I focus on creating organic, performance based recordings that put the listener in the room with the artist. I love to craft songs based on the sonic, emotional and lyrical inspiration.

With Lieutenant-Colonel David Davis Cole made everything happen. He listens closely. He has brilliant ideas. Goes above and beyond. Truly cares about music.

Cole makes creating music feel like the joy that it should be. His influence on the music of those around him is inspiring and amazing. I've thoroughly enjoyed the times I've had the privilege of recording with him and look forward to getting a call again in the future. Any time spent making music with Cole is time well spent. Couldn't recommend him more.

I've been making music with Cole for a decade and he never ceases to amaze me with his good ideas, and even better attitude. We've made records, we've scored films, we've spent months on tour in an RV together on tour. Nobody I would trust more with my music.

Throw any instrument at him and he'll make your song better.

Interview with Half Light Recordings

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The record "Back to the Country" stands out to me as I was the engineer, producer, guitar player and backup vocalist. It was an excellent experience where we brought all of our gear out to a cabin and spent two weeks crafting the songs as a team.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: There's always room for both.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: That I will deliver to you what you asked from me.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The ability to tune out the world and dive into complete creativity.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What artists have inspired this specific piece of art and why?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: The clearer you can be on what you're looking for sonically the better.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Electro Dynamic Re-20 Dynamic Microphone x2 MacBook Pro Arturia Interface Hologram Effects Chroma Console

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started as a session/touring guitar player for over 10 years - all the while recording my own songs. I made the transition to full time production in 2019 and have worked on an released several full lengthy albums since then while still touring and working on my own music.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Don't be afraid to try new things - many of the most important albums were made by "breaking the rules".

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Most often singer-songwriter, alternative rock and pop music. Typically with solo artists who want a full track production to suit their lyrics and vocals.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Making artists feel heard, bringing their vision for their art to life and pushing the music into new and exciting sonic territory.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring lively, organic and experimental energy to any project. I like to start with a direction thats based on a song or tone of a specific artist and then let the song - as well as the artist - dictate what the song will sound like in the end. I firmly believe that the artist themselves are producing the songs alongside me.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: After receiving a recorded scratch vocal track thats been recorded to a click, I like to experiment in my studio with all my instruments and build up what I call a "sketch track". After that the client can make tweaks to the general tone and arrangement. Once we've got a general direction that is feeling good for the artist I then start making production revisions. I would like to note the difference between production revisions and mix revisions. If the artists would like me to mix the track as well - that is a separate service from production and should be discussed as so.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I am to record sources very cleanly, so that it lends alot of room to mess around with in post. I use Arturia Discrete Pro Preamps which are to my money have the best dynamic range and clean gain of any preamp I've used. I have tube, dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones for any source and like to experiment to get unique tones that satisfy the curious listener. I like using outboard compressors - mainly to keep dynamic range within a reasonable range and I prefer to work in the box for post production processing.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Blake Mills, Shawn Everett, Kenneth Blume, Ariel Rechtshaid, Dan Nigro, Nigel Godrich,

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Composing, engineering , recording and producing songs and albums.
