Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was the vocal engineer for Will Smith most recently release track “Fiesta”
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently engineering a writing session for a Universal Music Group dancehall artist at their Toronto studio
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: David Mohacsi expert editor
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! They all have their unique pros and cons. I’m the end there are just different tools to get the job done!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will be 100% satisfied with your choice in hiring me.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to turn ideas into reality and stepping away from a project knowing I improved its quality to a commercial level where it will be competitive among the artist’s contemporaries
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How many revisions do you offer, do you offer bulk pricing, can you do alt mixes. I offer 2-3 revisions generally but will do whatever it takes to get it right. I offer deals on multiple songs so just ask! I generally will provide full mix, accapella, instrumental and TV mix.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The amount of time that it actually takes to do good work. Going over detail after detail is very time consuming but results in a flawless product
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How long have you been making music, is there other people involved (producer, or recording engineer) or if it’s self produced/recorded. What’s the expectation for the project (single, ep, album etc) what files will they be delivering, is there a rough mix, reference tracks, deadline, budget etc.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Discuss the project ahead of time. The proposal is essentially the first step to seeing if we’re going to be a good fit. I’m selective about the projects I work on and so should the client. I only want to be involved in a product that I can be proud of and make sound great.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mac, apollo twin, neve 1073, midi keyboard, acoustic guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Self taught , then Audio recording school, commercial studio internship, assistant engineer, engineer, senior engineer and now freelance engineer+producer
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean and modern! Big and spacious!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Pharrell, OutKast, Tyler the creator, Tim Armstrong, dua lipa, drake, Kanye etc
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Take breaks! Your ears are like a muscle and need time to rest. Even a 10 minute listening break will give you enough time and distance from a song to give you the proper perspective and focus it deserves
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I’m on the forefront of modern music including pop, hip hop, indie and rock and all their nuanced subgenres
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communicating and translating ideas in order to achieve a desired Sonic realization
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My high attention for detail and superior sonic quality. My great ability to communicate with the client to make the vision come to life is on point. I also exercise great patience and understanding. I’ve been doing this for many years and have experience working in all types of situations, in all types of genres and all kinds of people.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to discuss the song and the vision with the artist ahead of time. Talk about what they like, what they don’t like. Get a few good commercially release references to use for comparison.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of a variety of Toronto’s best studios including Noble Street Studios, Revolution Records, Universal Music Group Studios (80A), Union Sound company as well as my own full treated production/mixing writing room.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’ve worked with so many inspirational producers and engineers it’s hard to say. I’ve learned so much from classic pros from Joe Chiccarelli, George Massenburg, Bob Ezrin, to modern day greats like Boi 1da, Tminus, Rex Kudo, etc
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing remotely. In person local recording sessions at Toronto’s best studios. Song production/writing and instrument/vocal tuning and timing
