Interview with Ryan Casey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently recorded all the guitars for Netflix's hit show "Tiger King" the greatest hits album.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on my private teaching studio and working as much as I can as a session musician.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Arianna Hume - female demo vocalist
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Specifically for recordings guitars I would have to go with Analog. There is just a warmness and a response that you get that I think is really hard to replicate digitally.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will not end our proposal until they are 100% satisfied.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They most commonly ask me what equipment I use which is easy to answer because I will just send them my equipment list.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do as a musician is that I want to be famous one day or success will only be if I'm famous.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as you can with the direction you want the provider to go in. Provide reference tracks and or examples. It will save a lot of time in the process.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my American Strat, my Supro amp, my pedal board, my computer and a midi keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working as a freelance musician full-time in Nashville for 2 years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with John P Kee. I love Gospel music and he is one of my ultimate favorite gospel artists.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I often time add a super fast tape delay to my guitars to just give them a bit of a wider feel.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love to work on all type of music but mainly I've been working on funk, R&B, gospel, and jazz.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think my strongest skill is being able to interpret the vision a client has.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually listen through the song and chart it out so I can see and understand the form. I upload the guide track in logic and fix it to the grid and add in arrangement markers. I then make sure I fully understand the client's directions and ideas and record until I feel like they have come to life. Once I'm happy with it, I edit the tracks where necessary and send a bounced version to the client for consideration.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work for me is in the funk, R&B range. I love playing over beats and adding my own flavor to enhance the vision and direction of the songwriter/producer.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the collaboration with other people, I love taking an idea and creating something meaning full and something that will bring happiness to others.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the message of the song? What is the vibe you are going for, and what artist/records inspired you for this project? What is the purpose for this project?
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as soulful, well informed, groovy, and jazzy with a bit of boldness.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I aim to serve the song and to serve the client. First and foremost I bring the best parts I can bring for the song and for the project. I also bring a wealth of experience and styles to any project or track. Because of my versatile back-round I can add new and creative ways to help bring your track to life. I have an eclectic voice and when given creative leniency I can really make my work shine and standout.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am currently running Logic Pro X on my Apple Mac 2017. I play through a Supro Coronado and use many pedals to create the sound I am going for.
