Interview with NOKAMI
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Lisha G - Groovy Steppin Sh*t I was the mixing & mastering engineer for the entire project, as well as the recording engineer for some the of songs. It won #4 on Pitchfork's best rap albums of 2024. Lisha and I have been working for a long time and it felt like we really made something refreshing and fun to listen to.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hiphop: Trap music, melodic rap, R&B, cloud rap, boom bap, experimental, autotune Rock: Shoegaze, metal
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When mixing a song for an artist, I first talk with the artist to get an idea of where they want to take the song. I like to listen to their other work to get an idea of the space they like to exist in, as well as their favorite songs so I know what they like. I take the direction they give me as a way to get the sound started. The first draft I send back to an artist is usually packed with a bunch of creative mixing ideas. I like to give the song an identity, and create little moments that keep you listening and guide you from parts of the song. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, so with the artist we pick and choose what we want to keep and continue polishing the song until it's the best version of what we hear in our heads.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of my favorite mixing engineers are Mike Dean, Alex Tumay, Terry Date,Nick Raskulinecz, and Bainzz. I love dynamic mixes that are full of ear candy, little details that you discover the more you listen to the song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work is in the studio, recording and mixing a song for my clients. Sometimes they will have me produce it as well, and we create from scratch. I like to be as involved as the artist wants me to be. My brain is always turning with ideas, and I love to collaborate with the artist to guide them to a finished song.
