Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ear. The one biggest skill I have learned through my career as a live musician and music producer is how to listen. Without that, I would have nothing! Through listening I can hear, feel, analyze, and imagine both where a song is, and where it should go. After that I would say it's the 20 years of education as a piano player in both classical and jazz, and my 10 years of experience in music production :)
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Through over 10 years of education and experience as both a live musician as well as music producer, I have learned that the most important elements of modern music are vibe, movement, and balance. I want music to make you feel, make you move, and feel alive!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Working from my studio in the heart of downtown Toronto, I work in a treated room with a pair of Focal Twin6 Studio Monitors, a Universal Audio Apollo 16 audio interface, and a 2019 Macbook Pro, equipped with Logic Pro X, Pro Tools 10, and Ableton 10 running advanced VSTs including Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2, Native Instruments Komplete 12, Izotope Neutron 2, Ozone 8, and RX 7. I also have a Dave Smith Prophet 12 synthesizer, Nord Stage 2 digital piano, KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors, and Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When mixing and mastering, I start by organizing my session; grouping instruments, creating busses and colour coding all tracks. I will send an initial mix/master and then accept notes on revisions which I will then implement into the session. My turnover rate is fast and I am flexible with notes. Production is very similar, I'll either start with an idea or work off one that is given to me and then build and arrange the song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the work I do is production, mixing, and mastering although I also occasionally do composition for advertising, film and television.
