Dave Janssen, Studio 302 on SoundBetter

Dave has been a professional bass player since 2004, with jazz/pop performance and recording training from Grant McEwan College in Edmonton, AB. He is a touring player with Jon Bauer, Wakeup Starlight, Mike Schuster and more.

Quick, professional tracking of electric bass. Any style, though admittedly not much of a slap player. :)
Very adaptable to any genre.
One-day turnaround for editing, within reason. Vocal editing done using Melodyne.
Broadcast quality mixes using Apple Logic.

Dave was a pleasure to work with. I sent him my song with the recorded bass idea and he sent me back something much better than I could have ever imagined. Made my song sound 100% better. I'm very happy with the finished product. He is very responsive, friendly and has great talent. I will definitely be reaching out to Dave again.

Dave was great to work with. His base lines were exactly what we wanted on these tracks, he nailed them, with little guidance, first time through. Very impressive work. He far exceeded my expectations!

Interview with Dave Janssen, Studio 302

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I like to listen to a song before I play on it, and then start playing on it. I typically don't use my first few takes, as I tend to play too many notes, and I whittle it down until it's perfect.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Simple setup. For bass I use a SansAmp programmable DI running into my Yamaha i88x interface. I sometimes put my Alesis compressor in the chain if I want a little more meat. For a little more colour I can use an M-Audio DMP3 preamp instead of the Yamaha pres, which are quite clear. I record in Logic Pro 9 on an iMac and listen on KRK Rokit8s and Shure headphones.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: Most often I have been doing electric bass tracks for clients on SoundBetter. For a lot of genres a great bass line is extremely important to the emotion of a song, and my clients need that.
