Interview with Dave Janssen, Studio 302

Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to listen to a song before I play on it, and then start playing on it. I typically don't use my first few takes, as I tend to play too many notes, and I whittle it down until it's perfect.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Simple setup. For bass I use a SansAmp programmable DI running into my Yamaha i88x interface. I sometimes put my Alesis compressor in the chain if I want a little more meat. For a little more colour I can use an M-Audio DMP3 preamp instead of the Yamaha pres, which are quite clear. I record in Logic Pro 9 on an iMac and listen on KRK Rokit8s and Shure headphones.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most often I have been doing electric bass tracks for clients on SoundBetter. For a lot of genres a great bass line is extremely important to the emotion of a song, and my clients need that.
