Interview with Esteban Rotunno
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I´ve worked on the recording, production and mixing process of Hernan Lechuga´s album "El aire incendiado" it was a double LP record that i´ve done in my homestudio, and it´s a great record, deep messagges, and powerful music.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Severals projects working on another online platforms.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, for the moment.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Both options has pros. Digital is cheaper and faster in terms of setting up the whole thing. Analog has the flavour, warm and old school sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won´t let you down, i always answer the questions that you have for me, you´re not a client you´re an artist connecting to another artist.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to do it from my homestudio and connect to people around the globe knowing another culture and vision of the music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most common question is "when will you deliver"? my answer is "today or tomorrow".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Still the professional art it is not seen like a way of life, it´s more like a "hobby" for most of the people.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have any reference of what do you want, regarding to drum sound?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be sure of what do you want, search for references that you like to sound like, and enjoy the process.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Snare, Bassdrum, Hi hat, usb audio interface (4 channels, cables, mics and stuff)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I´ve been playing drums since i was 11 years old, now i´m 38. I have played and toured with many well known national artists from fusion to mainstream pop, and international artists such as María Creuza, Toquinho (brassilian singers).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versatile.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I think brassilian composer and singer DJAVAN, because it reunites all of my favourites genres.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you don´t have a good room sound or any room at all, for your drums, create one stereo track on your daw where you´ll be sending the drumbus track. Insert a reverb plugin and choose room preset, or a good reverb natural sound, just arm that channel and record it just playing the track of the whole drums. And that´s it you have a stereo room track to add to your delivery tracks.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rock, Latin music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Tempo, fast deliveries, and knowing my gear from many years of working with it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Pro sound quality, and an artistic approach from my way of playing, years of playing and recording has gave me the experience to make the better resolutions for the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The client sends to me the reference track with an idea of the drums, and another without the drumtrack. I must have the bpm´s and the frequencie range in which the client wish to record, and that´s it.
