Interview with Kazi Jay
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide pristine, skillful voacals to pair with your production for any personal or professional project! For a small additional charge, I can provide harmonies, doubles and a wall of background vocals per request and agreement prior to pre-production. I also primarily work with producers and songwriters creating amazing demos for them to pitch to other artists and publishing companies.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: There are so many musicians from Adele, to Julia Micheals, and producers from Benny Blanco to David Hodges, I feel like todays industry is comprised of so much diverse talent, and living in a generation where diversity is welcomed more than ever, I try to glean inspiration from all these pop/ alt. music creators.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: A client will send me their music arrangment, concept or production start, and after I've reviewed your standing project, I will either accept or graciously decline the project depending on if I am able to provide what you're looking for. The next step would be pre- production where I will develop a few different directions we can go- either your provided lyrics/ or cowritten lyrics we create, and then we shape out the song structure. Once we settle on the vocal approach, I record the vocal, adding any additional vocal layering and harmonies we've settled on.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Partnering with me creatively, I help you find the perfect vocal, through suggestions and bringing my expertise in both songwriting and song structure. I am an intuitive, and seasoned vocalist that loves creating melodies and harmonies to bring life songs using dynamic and originality!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creating ear catching melodies, and thought provoking lyrics. Being scouted and making it through to continue on to season 13 of Americas Got Talent for my original music, has been a testament to my ability to write works, both sonically and lyrically, that resonate with people on a broad scale.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: LISTEN to your music production. Do not try to tell a story that isn't there. The lyrics and melody of a song are a partner, not a follower, of the production. If you can create something that reflects like what it's saying, the probability that it will STICK, increases its liability by 10 fold.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: "Kazi can deliver powerful Adele- esque vocals when the song calls for it... and I can also sing warm, airy & quirky like Juliette Michaels." - Nolan Neal, Former lead singer for HINDER & Star of NBC’s The Voice
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I left home at age 18 to go on a 6 month tour, and intern with a performing artist across the US. Being from the island of Kauai, I knew that achieving a successful and sustainable career meant leaving home and pursuing music with everything I have. Now at 23, I've played hundreds of shows, worked on countless projects, released an EP in 2015, written with incredible writers and producers, and just this year was featured as a singer/songwriter on Americas Got Talent season 13. I am still that fiery eyed girl chasing those dreams today, and wouldn't change my journey one bit!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A nord, my Taylor, my capo (; my multitrack voice recorder, my laptop and one line of wireless internet to file share my ideas to the outside world of producers LIKE YOU!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: KNOW what you want. Obviously we'd hope that would be the case for anyone looking to hire a vocalist, but its kind of goin to get your hair done at a salon, if you don't know what you want, chances of you getting what you want aren't very luckily. I want to be as efficient as possible for you, so providing me with a playlist of vocalist, specific vocal tones, and moods help me to sketch out the initial run throughs in our pre production process. I'm here to help you all the way, but even having a few pieces to run with will help us communicate expectation for the success of your project!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your biggest hope/expectation for you project?!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: WHY DONT YOU HAVE MORE MUSIC OUT! Great question; Ive been songwriting for the last few years working to build up an album of singles to release in 2020- but in the mean time- working on projects with you guys provides me a stream of income from doing what I love, while making a way to work with my dream producers to bring MY work to life!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give you something you're proud of. When you provide me with a project I believe in, whether Im singing yours, mine or co written lyrics, I will give you the best melodies I can "hear" on your track. So come on, lets make something AMAZING already!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently Im working on a song with a producer and songwriter out of Nashville on a project they will be proposing to a few recording artists shopping for completed works to purchase.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In 2017 I worked with producer/songwriter/ artist Lee Miles & Ste'louse (on Republic Records) assisting in the pre production of the vocal pitch demo of "Nobody Told me" that was performed by artist David Davis.
