Interview with RICKY LEGEND

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My two singles. I did everything myself (writing, performing all instruments, recording, mixing, and mastering) and I'm very proud of them!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Recording and Mixing EPs for local artists.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both are amazing and should be used differently, not to replace one with the other.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That their vision will be met, and if I don't, I will keep revisioning until I do.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It's art and I enjoy it so much. It's so liberating, there's no rules and constrictions.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: When can we work again? Whenever I'm free. What else can you do this song? I give my suggestions when asked, all for the song's sake.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it is a science more than art. That a book and a cheat-sheet will make a great mix.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is your vision? Why are you passionate about this song?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Make sure you hire someone who is sensitive to your vision and understands what you are trying to achieve, musically.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Fender Stratocaster. Sennheiser HD6XX headphones. Fender Twin Reverb amp. My computer(Pro Tools). SM57 Microphone.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Audio Production and Music Performance. I've been consistently mixing for 5 years and performing guitar for 9.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Sensitive. I'm sensitive to the song and the music. I do what I feel the music needs, not generic book-taught mixing tips that remove the art from mixing.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Jacob Collier. I feel like he understands music on levels that no other human can. He sort of decoded and stripped back all the mystery and mythology behind music and figured out the music genome.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: There's no rules or right way to do things. It's art. If it sounds good, it is good.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I've worked with all sorts of genres from punk to jazz, from hip-hop to ballads, etc. However, I would say my best work comes out with the singer-songwriter and R&B genres.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Communication is my strongest skill. When it comes to art in general, it is hard to specifically describe ideas to someone else. It is some sort of riddle. I have gotten very good at understanding music ideas and visions.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: With mixing, I bring sonic quality. Most clients are recording their own music and I make it sound like it was recorded at a professional recording studio. With guitar, I bring subtle enhancements to the song with lead lines and rhythmic notes. From sweet melody lines to bigger-than-life distorted guitars, depending on what the song needs.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: First, I communicate with the artist and/or producer to understand their vision for the song because as I songwriter myself, I understand how important the vision is. After, I do my best to achieve the vision and even try to surpass expectations when possible (of course, with careful perception).

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: It's a home studio that I've been working on for 9 years. Steadily improving with better gear and better audio plugins.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Manny Marroquin and his work with John Mayer is what made me pursue sonic perfection. John Mayer inspires me when it comes to songwriting and guitar playing.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: mixing and tracking guitar for songs.
