I specialize in Urban Music (Hip Hop, Trap, Reggaeton, etc.) Expert in making vocals stand out and cut through the mix and making cuts on beats to give different vibes to songs and structuring them in a way that keeps the listener interested and hype. I work mostly with Latin Urban artist but I can work in all types of music and languages.

Interview with Josh "La Barba de Oro"

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am really proud of all my work actually cause I know I am making my clients happy while giving them the best sound possible. My work with big artist is super interesting and loved by many but making a great sounding production for a up and coming artist that has never expected sounding so good is specially satisfying. Love to help!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working with Maldy from the duo Plan B constantly and working on my own productions.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not that I know of, just discovered the website today.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. Would love to work more on analog but I don't have the right tools and knowledge yet. Plus digital is very portable too ;-)

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will do for you what I would do for any and all of the artist I work with Big, Small or New. I will give 110% to getting to what you want and need from the production.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Creation. I am a creative person, I love the aspect of taking the clients idea and taking it to another level and leaving him/her impressed.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can we redo this part? For sure, a hundred more times if we have to, we need this to be Gold.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Press Record, Stop and Render. Mostly people don't understand the creative aspect to engineering and producing a song. It's a work of art just like a painting or a sculpture. You have to pay attention to detail.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your goal with this work? What is it exactly that you are looking to do?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure you are working with a person that LOVES his work. Otherwise they won't get you what you need. Music is a product of patience, enjoyment and efficiency.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, Apollo Quad, Neumann TLM 103, Headphones and Monitors. Probably make a booth out of sand :D

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started my own studio back in Puerto Rico in 2010 but I was making music since 2006. I started getting good probably like 4 years ago when I moved to Orlando and started working on big studios with expensive equipment. Learned how to appreciate sound better.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I've been told I'm the fastest person in Pro Tools as in work flow is really fast. I usually develop and execute an idea right before the client tells me he wants it. I am a customer service oriented person so I am very compliant to the needs of the production.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Bad Bunny because i am sure we would vibe well and make awesome music.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Listen for the punchlines and hype them up by making cuts and silences it will make people appreciate better the lyrics and keep the song interesting throughout the whole thing.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Latin Urban (Reggaeton, Rap, Hip Hop, Trap, Pop) and regular Urban music as well.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I have patience. I enjoy my work, I love making music so I put my heart in every record. My main goal is making my client happy and satisfied with the final product. I like to hype up the artist and remind him that music transmits emotions and that he needs to feel that emotion so the listener can go on the journey with him. He is the King/Queen of the World while in the booth and NO ONE can take that from him/her, so that has to show in the voice and in the delivery.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I like suggesting new ideas and a different view. I enjoy getting in the production part of the song. Help out with structure and flow so it will be a whole trip on the final product not just a linear song that takes you nowhere.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I am a down to business guy. Meet up talk a bit and right to the work. I like to make my client feel comfortable and relaxed. First a few minutes in the booth practicing the song for warming up and getting to know what is going to happen in the song and how much I can ask of the artist. Then just dig in to it, help out with suggestions and correcting so we can get the best out of the artist.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: We work in the box. We have an iMac with Pro Tools set up with Waves, FabFilter, UADs, etc. KRK V8s w. Sub and Yamaha HS5 for second monitors. The mic is a Neumann TLM 103 going thru the Avalon 737sp comp and UAD Apollo 8. More equipment is coming soon, hopefully will get the new Avantone CLA10 soon.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Gaby Music is a great inspiration I admire his work and so is Master Chris. They are top notch Latin engineers/producers. Artist wise, it may sound weird since I work with Latin Urban and Hip Hop but Ruben Blades, Metallica, Robi Draco Rosa are some of the ones that I most admire. Their work is incredible.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording, Coaching, Mixing and Mastering songs. I help them from the beginning, they come in with an idea and I won't rest until we get exactly what they are looking for and are completely satisfied.
