Interview with Cristian F. Rivera (IreCris)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of my proudest projects was directing and producing playback for Kany García’s live show. We built a set that was both technically seamless and emotionally powerful. My role included arranging, playback programming, and live musical direction.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently serving as the Music Director for one of the most important Latin artists of today—Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Kany García. In addition, I'm producing music for sync licensing, recording guitars for various pop and soul projects, and continuing to expand the work of my company, IreCris Music Group.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I love the warmth and personality of analog, but I embrace the precision and flexibility of digital. I use a hybrid workflow to get the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Excellence, heart, and clarity. I’ll treat your music like my own and won’t stop until it feels right.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The moment when the song clicks—when it feels alive. Helping someone’s vision come to life and knowing I added value to that story.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask: Can you make it sound like [insert artist]? My answer: Yes—but even better if we find what makes you stand out while honoring that influence.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's just “recording some guitars” or “programming some tracks.” In reality, it's a full creative partnership—and the smallest details often take the most experience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask: – What feeling do you want the listener to walk away with? – Who are your references? – What are your deadlines and expectations for collaboration?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone who truly listens to your vision—and who values the why behind the song just as much as the how. Chemistry and clarity are everything.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I’d take my Duesenberg guitar, my Fender Deluxe Reverb amp, my Mac Studio loaded with a DAW, and my Cranborne 500R8 interface paired with the Chandler TG500 preamps. With that setup, I could create, feel, and record music even in the middle of nowhere.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been a professional guitarist and producer for over 15 years. I toured with the great singer songwriter Kany García, served as a musical director, and now lead my own company, IreCris Music Group, producing music for albums, sync, and live performances.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, soulful, and intentional. Whether in guitar playing or production, my style is all about emotion, clarity, and storytelling through sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like John Mayer, Chris Stapleton, Jacob Collier or Jon Batiste—people who blend deep musicality with fearless creativity.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Leave space. Great production isn’t about stacking sounds—it’s about knowing when not to play, and letting the emotion lead the way.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on pop, soul, Latin, worship, and singer-songwriter music. I love blending organic and modern textures that breathe and move with intention.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Bringing a clear musical identity to each track—whether that’s through emotional guitar tones, tasteful arrangements, or tight musical direction. Also, my ability to connect quickly with artists and translate their ideas into finished music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring soul, depth, and intention. Whether through guitar, production, or musical direction, my goal is always to serve the emotion and message of the song—not just fill space.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin by understanding the vision and emotional goal of the project. Then I build a sonic map—starting with reference tracks, creating or arranging parts, and recording either guitar, full rhythm sections, or synth textures. I work in layers, always refining tone and groove until it feels alive.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a hybrid studio centered around a Cranborne 500R8 interface with a Chandler TG500 preamp. I use Pro Tools Ultimate and Ableton Live, a variety of top-tier mics and analog gear, and I rely on a musical, treated space that allows me to track guitars, keys, and full productions from home with professional high quality.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by musicians like Michael Landau, Michael Thompson, Steve Lukater, Dan Huff, Dan Warner,Tim Pierce and —people who bring both heart and precision to everything they play or produce.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most often serve as a guitarist, music producer, and musical director—either leading full-scale productions or contributing guitar work that adds depth and soul to a song. I also program playback tracks for tours, churches, and live shows.
