Interview with stephenrayger
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: when i work on a project i usually work with my team of songwriters/producers/engineers. its usually all of us emailing different versions of the same song and we pick and choose what we like and dont like about each one until as a group we all decide that this is whats best for the song/project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: i am working on all kinds of music. i recently have been digging into the country pop market, songwriting/producing/engineering for artists on sirius x the highway. that has been a lot of fun because usually i have worked with hip hop, reggae and alt rock artists.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: i work remote so i do not know anyone else unless i have seen them in the studios.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: analog would be the dream and i have used analog equipment in major studios in hollywood. i use state of the art digital equipment and its great. but i wont lie analog is the way to go if you have the time and money. if you are on a budget i would recommend having someone like me mix your music the way i do and i can refer you to an analog mastering engineer in hollywood or even nashville for that matter.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: i promise you i will make your music cool sounding.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: everything. this is all i know how to do. i live and breathe music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: how do you make it sound the way you do? a lot of trial and error over the years and learning how a live crowd is going to react and engage when listening to your music.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: dogsh*t cannot be polished. send me quality music and i will turn it into gold.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: tell me exactly what you are looking for. if you want it to sound a certain way i can make it happen for you.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: if you want to sound cool and actually get people to say what song is this i would hire me to mix your music.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: guitar, piano, bass, microphone & my recording equipment
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: i have been managing and playing in california bands and on national tours since i was 15 years old. it wasn't until i was 18 years old i decided to educate myself in music production/engineering. i have been doing this for about 8 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: cool
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: all the artists i want to work with have passed away. however steven tyler would be amazing i have always looked up to him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: have no limits
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: hip hop / alt rock
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: my strongest skill is making music sound cool

A: industry standard / hit potential
Q: What's your typical work process?
