Interview with Yann Costa e Silva

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Pressão Baixa is a project that I'm really proud of. I engineered, mixed and played drums on the record. Nothing was rehearsed. I called some friends just to jam and have some fun and before they came, I put some mics, compressed some stuff, organised a pro tools session and left recording while we played. For me, the whole experience was amazing and that's why I'm proud of it.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently producing a post-rock record and I'll be mixing the same record. Alongside, I'm working on the soundtrack for a short film.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: It depends. Usually, I'm recording everything analog, trying to make the recording to sound like an amazing record already in this process, and mixing everything digitally, in-the-box, with VST and DSP plugins.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I can do whatever the crazy idea you have in your mind and I can deliver it to you as soon as possible.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: Analog is better than digital and loud is better. This is nuts.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: I think I would take things that I can make my own stuff there. A fender jazzmaster, a roland jazz chorus amp, an universal audio apollo twin mike quad, an old TASCAM portable cassette tape recorder and my yamaha hs5.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I'm a musician for over 15 years. I became obsessed with music really young and I started playing the drums as a kid and got into guitars when I was a teenager. I became crazy about how much you can do with sound, and all the pedals, amps, microphones, etc. I graduated in Graphic Design and started studying to be an audio engineer and sound designer. Worked as a freelance assistant on a garage recording studio in São Paulo in 2016 and as a freelance audio engineer in Maceió in 2017. Now I'm the founder and audio engineer for Deafcult Electric Co. a remote mixing and producing studio based in São Paulo, BR.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I really don't know HAHAHAHA I just love loud, dirty, noisy and crazy sounds. A mix of a lot of ambience and fuzzy dystopic sounds to make huge and punchy music.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Superheaven, Teenage Wrist, Whirr, Nothing, Thrice, Balance And Composure, Basement, Citizen, Beach Fossils, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver, Brand New, Big Jesus, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Bass Drum Of Death, Bully, Fidlar, Hundredth, It Looks Sad, Japandroids, Jawbreaker, Joyce Manor, La Dispute, mewithoutYou, Microwave, Miserable, Modern Baseball, Movements, O'brother, Narrow Head, Pity Sex, A Place To Bury Strangers, Portishead, Quicksand, Skegss, Slowdive, The Story So Far, Wavves, Sunny Day Real State, Tigers Jaw, Touché Amoré, Turnover, WAAX, Warpaint, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die...The reason is really simple: some of my favorite bands and my favorite kind of music to work with.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Usually I work with anything that comes to me, but my favorite type of music are emo, shoegaze, post-rock, garage, noise, post-punk, punk and hardcore.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: I believe my strongest skill is a highly trained ear.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: John Dwyer, Andre Scheps, Vance Powell, Will Yip, Lee Ranaldo, Jack Endino, Steve Albini, Eric Valentine, Josh Homme, Butch Vig and Nick Launey.
