Interview with Alec

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am especially proud to have worked on a few Grammy winning albums. India aire’s testimony vol 2, lecrae’s Gravity, and Mary J Blige’s Growing Pains. I engineered and mixed on these projects

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on tracking with the metal band DragonForce. As well as mixing various projects for Yo Gotti, and CMG

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not sure

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I like to use digital audio workstations such as protools, Logic and Ableton. They bring a convenience and speed that is important in today’s production. This digital equipment can be made to sound better using an analog mix process that incorporates circuits with tubes and transformers giving more headroom and coloration to the sound.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to make your project reach it fullest potential so it can reach the widest audience.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like being able to work on all different kinds of music and with different clients.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much do you charge? How did you make it sound so good? Where did all that bass come from?!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it’s all fun and games hanging out in the studio. It’s actually hard work and long hours.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your budget? What is your expected turn around time? What are some songs that you think sound good as reference material.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for a provider with lots of experience and credits to back it up.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Neve 33609 Neve 1081 Tubetech CL1B 1176 Neumann U67

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a BS in Recording Technology and Mass Communication. I then started working in Atlanta, Ga. I interned at ZAC recording, then became staff engineer at Doppler Studios Atlanta where I worked on top line music artists and postproduction for tv and movies. I eventually opened my own studio, Music House Studios which I operated for 10 years. In 2013 I relocated to Los Angeles and opened Fader Room Studios where I currently work. I’ve been engineering professionally for 20 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is upfront vocals and big solid bass with forceful drums

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Since I’ve already worked with most of my bucket list artists, I would like to work w the next new undiscovered star!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: In today’s music environment, projects are often recorded at home Studios, on the road, or wherever creativity strikes. It’s important to have these projects professionally mixed to ensure that the song’s potential is reached and the largest audience can be exposed to it

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on Urban, rap and r&b, and Pop music, but have done all genres throughout my career

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my ability to bring a full, modern radio ready sound to all the projects I work on.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring 20 years of professional audio experience to all the music I work on, ensuring your songs are brought to their fullest potential

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?
