Interview with Maxime Oostenbrink

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both, I don't believe either one is good or bad. Both are different and have different skills.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Connect with the person, in music work relationships often come out of connection or even friendship. Of course the quality always matters, the provider should deliver the quality you are looking for. But you also have to connect.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Macbook Pro, Maschine Mk3., Sony MDR7, Pioneer FLX 4, Arturia Keylab 61

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Don't think of what you want to make before you make it. Just start and follow what feels right.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Electronic Dance Music

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Working creatively and never missing deadlines.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: The right energy, mood, sound and feel.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: My setup is powered by a MacBook Pro M2 running through a well trusted Focusrite interface. Working on two sets of monitors, Dynaudio and Adam Audio, I have both studio monitoring and Hifi monitoring. My levels are controlled by a Mackie volume controller and for final details I am using the Sony MDR-7 headphones.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Prunk, The Weeknd, Max Martin, Luuk van Dijk, Coldplay and many more.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Ghost Productions, Mixing and Mastering. I also teach music production and DJ'ing to beginners and professionals.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: In mixing I always start with the most important part; setting a 45 minute timer to make sure I take breaks! Then I start with the other mos important thing, the levels. Then I set up a very gentle master bus processing, nothing crazy, but I like to give everything some color from the get-go. From there on I start with what feels best, often it's the drums. But it can be anything; the vocals, the piano, the samples. Next, I want to get the main mix ready before diving into automations. The mix has to be alive and flowing nicely before doing automations. From this point it's different for every track. In mastering I always start setting up the project and setting a 30 minute timer to make sure I don't stay stuck for too long. Once done, I listen to the track and scan the vibe, mood and the information. From here on, mostly I start with a very simple EQ, but really every track is different from there.
