Interview with Greg D Engineer

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: When I begin a dialogue with prospective clients, my goal is to deeply understand their vision and expectations. Here are the key questions I typically ask: "What excites you about this song or film?" – This helps me gauge their passion and the personal connection they have with the project. Understanding what drives them gives me insight into how to best approach the production. "What vibe are you aiming for?" – Every creative work has a unique atmosphere or feeling it wants to convey. Knowing this upfront helps me align my work with their desired aesthetic. "What message are you looking to communicate?" – This question delves into the deeper purpose behind the project, ensuring that the end result effectively conveys their intended message. "What are the expected end deliverables?" – Understanding where the project will be published, be it on digital platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, in theaters, or on YouTube, helps me tailor the production for the best possible presentation in each medium. "Are you satisfied with the current performance and recording? Would you be open to revisions if necessary?" – This assesses their contentment with the existing material and their openness to changes that could enhance the project. "Who are some of your inspirations or favorite artists?" – Knowing their inspirations allows me to understand their taste and preferences, which can guide the stylistic direction of the project. "Do you have a deadline for delivery?" – This is crucial for effective time management and planning, ensuring that their project is completed efficiently and meets their timeline expectations. These questions not only help me to understand their project better but also establish a foundation for a collaborative and successful working relationship. By aligning our visions from the outset, we can embark on a creative journey that is both fulfilling and successful.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: My approach to music production is a meticulous and structured journey that begins with conceptualization. This initial stage is all about understanding the artist's vision and crafting the overarching theme of the project. From there, we move into arrangement, where I carefully construct the musical framework, ensuring that every note and beat serves the song's narrative. Pre-production follows, a critical phase where ideas are refined and the blueprint of the recording is laid out. This is where we revise and fine-tune the material, ensuring every element is perfectly aligned with the project's goals. Recording is where the magic happens, capturing the raw, emotive essence of the music. The subsequent editing phase is about polishing these recordings, ensuring clarity and cohesion. The process then transitions into stereo mixing, where I blend the tracks to create a harmonious and dynamic soundscape. Stereo mastering is the final touch, ensuring the track sounds fantastic on any system. For projects requiring immersive audio, I then proceed to the Atmos mix, elevating the experience to a three-dimensional auditory journey, before finally publishing the finished masterpiece. Enhanced Answer for Film Sound Production: My work in film sound production begins with a foundational kick-off meeting with the director and producer. This is crucial for grasping the vision and vibe of the project, allowing me to tailor the sound design to the film's unique narrative and aesthetic. Next, I establish a meticulous file naming and workflow organization system in collaboration with the film production team. This ensures smooth and efficient progress throughout the project. Field dialogue editing is the next step, where I meticulously refine the on-location audio for clarity and impact. ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) follows, seamlessly integrating studio-recorded dialogue with the on-screen action. Foley, ambience, and effects are then carefully crafted and added, enriching the film's soundscape and enhancing the storytelling. Scoring is an integral part of my process, where I either collaborate with composers or create original compositions that resonate with the film's mood and tone. The mix phase is where all these elements are skillfully blended to achieve a balanced and compelling auditory experience. Revisions are an essential part of this phase, ensuring the final product aligns perfectly with the director’s vision. The process culminates with an Atmos mix, offering an immersive audio experience, followed by re-renders for different formats like 5.1, catering to various distribution requirements. In both music and film sound production, my process is dynamic, collaborative, and always focused on enhancing the heart and soul of the project.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Gabriel Bg (Nashville singer/songwriter) - "Idiot Nation" 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos Mix "MightyClaw" short film for Sundance Film Festival 2024- Dialogue editing, scoring, sound design, Dolby Atmos Mix

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Nathan Sage. I love the way drums sound in that room.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: For anyone looking to hire a professional in the realm of music production, my advice is to seek out a partnership rather than just a service. While I'm relatively new to this platform, I can attest that it's brimming with talented individuals. However, the key to a successful collaboration lies in finding someone who goes beyond just delivering a service. Look for a professional who is willing to offer guidance and insights on how to elevate your production. In my own experience, I've worked with high-profile mastering engineers who were exceptionally skilled but offered limited feedback. Over time, I realized the importance of collaborating with individuals who are not just proficient but also communicative and open to providing constructive criticism. A good professional should be courteous, approachable, and invested in your project. They should be willing to engage in a dialogue, offering insights that can help improve your work. It's this kind of collaborative approach that can truly enhance the quality of your production and contribute to your growth as an artist. So, when choosing a provider, consider their willingness to be a part of your creative journey, to share their knowledge, and to help you realize your artistic vision. This kind of partnership can make all the difference in achieving a final product that you can be truly proud of.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: My journey in the music industry began 30 years ago, playing in a rock band with my friends—a band I'm still a proud member of today. This early experience laid the foundation for my deep connection with music. In my late teens to mid-twenties, I started mixing at live venues across Connecticut and Boston. I handled a diverse array of events, from rock festivals to cover bands, and even weddings, immersing myself in different music styles and honing my skills in various live sound environments. My first foray into studio work was at the studio formerly known as Planet Of Sound in Hartford, CT, where I had the opportunity to work with Miles Mangino, known for his work with the Pixies. That experience was a turning point, igniting my passion for music production. Driven by this newfound aspiration, I invested in my first Pro Tools HD TDM system. It was a significant step, as owning such equipment was a privilege at the time. I poured every hard-earned dollar into this venture, viewing it as an investment in my future. Since then, I've gradually built a reputation among local bands and a few international talents. I've had the honor of working with remarkable individuals like Miles Mangino of Planet of Sound, Mike Ferretti at Architekt Music, Clint Lowery of Seven Dust, and Nathan Sage of Sage Sound Studios. Each of these collaborations has been instrumental in shaping my skills and expanding my understanding of music production. Over the years, I've evolved from a musician passionate about live sound to a seasoned professional in music production. Each step of this journey has been a blend of learning, growth, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in the art of sound.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: My style as a music producer and audio engineer is fluid and ever-evolving, refusing to be confined within rigid boundaries. Generally, I have a profound appreciation for aggressive yet melodic arrangements. There's something incredibly compelling about the juxtaposition of raw power and tunefulness in music, and whenever it suits the project, I enjoy accentuating this aggressive edge to create a sound that's both intense and harmonious. However, I'm cautious about pigeonholing my style or striving to emulate a particular sound or artist. I believe that such comparisons can be creatively limiting. Every artist has a unique voice and identity, and my role is to help them find and express that individuality, not to mold them into a replica of someone else. My philosophy is centered around the concept that each artist should develop their own distinctive style, one that's open to change and growth. In my own work, I strive to maintain this adaptability, allowing each project to guide me rather than adhering to a predefined approach. This mindset not only keeps my work fresh and exciting but also ensures that every artist I work with can realize a sound that is authentically and uniquely theirs.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: In my journey as a music producer and engineer, my aspiration isn't tied to a specific name or fame. Instead, I'm drawn to working with artists who bring an opportunity for mutual growth and learning. The ideal collaboration for me is one where both the artist and I can inspire and challenge each other, pushing our creative boundaries and expanding our horizons. Such collaborations, where there's a genuine exchange of ideas and perspectives, tend to produce the most innovative and fulfilling work. I believe that when both the artist and the producer are learning and growing together, it adds a unique depth and authenticity to the music. These are the projects where unexpected magic happens, where new sounds are discovered, and where both of us can look back and see how we've evolved through the process. So, my ideal artist collaboration would be with someone open to exploration, willing to experiment, and eager to engage in a creative journey that benefits us both artistically and personally. It's this kind of synergistic partnership that often leads to groundbreaking music and lasting professional relationships.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Quality begins at the source. Whether it's a song, a film score, or any creative endeavor, the authenticity and belief in your work are paramount. As an artist, you must fully invest in and connect with what you're creating. This genuine connection is what breathes life into your work. In music, when you truly believe in the song you're singing or the music you're playing, it transcends mere notes and rhythms. It becomes a reflection of your passion and sincerity, and this is something that cannot be manufactured in post-production. The emotional depth and authenticity of your performance are key to creating a powerful, resonant experience for the listener. Similarly, in film production, being genuinely thrilled and committed to the story you're telling is crucial. This excitement and belief in the project infuse every aspect of the production, from the script to the final edit. Authenticity in your work is what ultimately captures and portrays an emotion or idea that can inspire or deeply move your audience. Always remember, the most sophisticated production techniques or the latest technology cannot substitute for the genuine heart and soul you put into your work. This principle is at the core of every memorable and impactful piece of art.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I have the privilege of working across a broad spectrum of musical genres, each offering its unique challenges and rewards. My expertise primarily spans Metal, Hard Rock, and Rock, where I delve into the intense and dynamic soundscapes that define these styles. In these genres, I focus on capturing the raw energy and power of the music, ensuring every track is a visceral experience for the listener. Additionally, I have a deep affinity for Hip Hop, where the interplay of rhythm and lyricism presents exciting opportunities for creative production. The genre's emphasis on beats, flow, and storytelling allows me to explore innovative mixing techniques that elevate the narrative. Acoustic music is another area of my work, where the purity and simplicity of the sound demand a meticulous and nuanced approach. Here, my goal is to preserve the natural beauty and intimacy of acoustic instruments and vocals, ensuring the essence of the performance is faithfully captured. Lastly, I also venture into the realm of EDM, a genre known for its intricate electronic soundscapes and pulsating rhythms. Working in EDM allows me to experiment with synthetic sounds and cutting-edge production methods, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in digital music production. This diversity in my work is not just a testament to my technical skills but also reflects my passion for exploring different musical landscapes. I consider myself fortunate to collaborate with a wide array of artists and clients, each bringing their unique vision and style to the studio. It's this variety that keeps my work exciting and continually inspires me to grow and evolve as a producer and engineer.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: My strongest skill lies in the art of mixing and editing, a domain where technical proficiency meets creative intuition. As a multi-instrumentalist with a solid foundation in music theory, I have a unique understanding of how different elements of a song interact and complement each other. This knowledge is invaluable in the mixing process, allowing me to blend various components – from vocals to instruments – into a cohesive, harmonious whole. My editing skills are equally vital, enabling me to refine and polish each track to perfection. I approach editing not just as a technical task but as an opportunity to enhance the emotional and narrative depth of the music. This involves not only aligning and timing but also understanding the subtle nuances that give a song its character and impact. The combination of these skills, bolstered by my musical background, allows me to guide projects smoothly through the production process. My aim is always to create a final mix that's not only technically sound but also emotionally resonant and true to the artist's vision. It's this blend of technical expertise, musical understanding, and creative sensibility that I bring to every project, ensuring a finished product that stands out in today’s dynamic music landscape.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: My contribution to a song is deeply tailored to the unique needs and vision of each artist and project. There are times when my role is to step back, allowing the song's intrinsic qualities to shine through with minimal interference. This approach is about respecting the raw, unadulterated essence of the music, where less is indeed more. Conversely, there are instances where my involvement is comprehensive, adding layers, textures, and dimensions to realize a more complex vision. In these scenarios, my extensive toolkit of production techniques and creative insights comes into play, transforming the foundational elements into a rich, captivating auditory experience. At the heart of my work is a profound respect for the artist's vision. I see myself as a facilitator, whose primary goal is to bring this vision to life in the most authentic and impactful way possible. Whether it involves subtle tweaks or significant transformations, my focus is always on serving the song and enhancing its narrative and emotional impact. What I bring to a song, therefore, is a blend of sensitivity and skill, restraint and creativity, all guided by a deep understanding of the artist's intent and the song's potential. It's about striking the right balance, ensuring that every production decision, whether big or small, contributes to a final product that resonates with both the artist and their audience.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: My studio is a thoughtfully designed, intimate space, tailored to foster creativity and produce high-quality sound. It consists of three specialized rooms: a live room, a vocal booth, and a control room. The live room is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate a five-member band, making it ideal for full band recordings and energetic jam sessions. The vocal booth is a dedicated space designed for pristine vocal recordings. It’s acoustically treated to ensure clarity and warmth in every vocal take, providing an intimate setting for vocalists to deliver their best performances. The heart of my studio is the control room, a hub of technology and creativity. It's equipped with a state-of-the-art Pro Tools HDX system on a PC and a Pro Tools Ultimate system with Dolby Atmos, complemented by a sophisticated 7.1.4 monitoring setup. This allows for intricate mixing and mastering, especially for projects that demand the immersive depth of Dolby Atmos. Flexibility is key in my studio setup. Patch points enable seamless routing between rooms, and a "hearback" monitoring system allows for personalized mixes, enhancing the recording experience for artists. Additionally, the studio is equipped with TV screens for ADR or voice-over work and cameras for live streaming, facilitating remote collaboration and web events. While my home studio is compact, it's highly functional and versatile, catering to a wide range of recording needs. For projects requiring a larger drum room sound, I have access to some exceptional local studios. Recently, I've conducted productions at Sage Sound Studios in Connecticut and Black Bird in Nashville, each offering unique acoustics and ambiance that contribute to the final sound. This setup reflects my commitment to delivering professional-grade recordings, whether it’s for a local indie band or a national artist. It's a space where technology meets creativity, and where every project is given the attention and care it deserves.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Electric Guitar, SM7b, Neve 1073, Midi Keyboard Controller, and a laptop.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Joe Barresi is a major influence for his exceptional balance in production. His ability to achieve a powerful, compelling sound without over-reliance on studio tricks or excessive layering is something I deeply admire. His work demonstrates that true artistry lies in subtlety and a keen understanding of the music's core essence. On the other end of the spectrum, I find the intensity of I Prevail incredibly inspiring. Their use of vast soundscapes and aggressive sonics creates a raw and powerful auditory experience. Their approach showcases the limitless possibilities of sound, encouraging a bold and unapologetic exploration of music production. Lastly, Miley Cyrus, particularly during her backyard sessions in the pandemic, has been a significant source of inspiration. Her rendition of "Jolene" exemplified the beauty of simplicity and authenticity in music. The grassroots style of these sessions, stripping back to the bare essentials, resonates with me. I’m drawn to the idea of creating music that's both raw and refined, capturing the true spirit of the artist without the layers of production. Each of these artists and producers, in their unique ways, ignites my passion for music production, continually inspiring me to explore, innovate, and create soundscapes that resonate deeply with listeners.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: My work primarily revolves around full-spectrum music production, guiding projects from the initial spark of an idea through to a polished, publication-ready masterpiece. This journey includes intricate arranging, where I weave together melodies and rhythms to create a compelling musical narrative. I’m deeply involved in every stage of the production process, ensuring that each element aligns with the artist's vision and the genre's nuances, whether it's Metal, Hard Rock, Indie, Punk, Hip Hop, or any fusion therein. With a keen ear for detail and a passion for bringing out the best in each track, I strive to not just meet but exceed client expectations, delivering a sound that's not only refined but also resonates with their target audience. My ultimate goal is to ensure that by the time a project leaves my studio, it's not just a song or an album, but a sonic experience that's ready to make its mark on the world.
