Hi. I'm Nicki. Songwriters, studio engineers and clients have entrusted their music to me for over two decades; from pop to salsa, rock to R&B, commercial jingles to jazz. I accomplish in hours what can take other singers an entire studio day.

I am a truly versatile singer, not a "copycat". My recording and performance career spans over two decades spanning Pop, Rock, Musical Theater, R&B/Hip-hop, American, Brazilian and Latin Jazz. I have recorded in English, Spanish & Portuguese. My complete immersion into these influences and the feel for their nuances are what I believe sets me apart from other singers. This voice must match the soul of the melody and lyrics, and the quality of the production.

I read music if you have lead sheets for me. Otherwise, I've got "horn player ears" and harmonize easily. I have an affinity for stacking harmonies, creating background parts and counterpoint melodies. I have my own studio and can render you finished work in 48 hours in most cases.

Interview with Nicki Gonzalez

Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I will make sure that the song is in a fitting key for my voice. Next, I vibe with the genre and style of the song to figure out the best vocal tone that tells the lyrical story and fits naturally within the music bed. From there, I follow yours directives - e.g. perform the melody exactly as written or flesh it out with my own melodic ideas; sometimes both. Stacking vocal harmonies is my favorite part. I can track your ideas or my own or both, giving you options.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is that I'm not just a singer - I'm a musician. I read and write music, I hear harmonies naturally. This gives me the vocabulary to communicate efficiently with instrumentalists and producers and promptly apply their/your directives.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring to each song a unique understanding of how listeners hear music: from the top down - and the "the top", I mean from the voice down. As a singer/songwriter, I emote into your lyrics so your story is not only understood but felt. But my favorite part is arranging impactful background vocals that frame the phrases that matter most.

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Pop songwriters inspire me most. I think it takes tremendous skill to write something simple, memorable, with a clear message and mass appeal.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Stunning lead vocals have been the majority of my work for over 20 years but background vocal arrangements have become my newest passion and special skill. I find the space around the lead vocal, framing it so it stands out and creating interplay. I know when to emphasize the most important lyrics, when to feature a counterpoint melody and when to back off and support from underneath with oohs-n-aahs. I also write lyrics for select artists in all genres and will do lyric translations/interpretations in Spanish & Portugese.
