My job is to record parts that you and I both agree are a perfect match for your track. I combine a careful understanding of your goals with my own intuitions, and then work until you are fully satisfied.
I play a Brodmann baby grand piano, which I can mic in a variety of ways depending on the sound you want. If you have a reference track with a sound similar to what you're looking for, I can usually emulate it quite closely. I also have a Korg D1 digital piano with very realistic acoustic and electric sounds. The piano I use depends simply on the details of your project.
For bass, I play an Ibanez 4-string electric or a Kay upright. I can get funky, or keep things simple as can be. (Disclaimer: I do not play classical upright bass).
I start at $50 for average-length songs. And if at any point you decide I am not the right fit for your project, and you'd rather cancel the job, I will fully refund you.

Interview with Ben Somerville
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have an intuitive ability to find the soul of a song, and then enhance and crystallize it with my playing. On piano it can be easy to obscure a song's heart with excessive dynamics or too many notes, and I am committed NOT to do that. Your track won't just be 'bigger' or 'fuller' with my playing––it will be more powerful.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Anything from classical vocal accompaniments to smooth and funky rhythm tracks for full productions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always start with clear communication. The more I understand your goals, the better I can fit my playing into the final picture. Then I arrange and record until I'm confident things are sounding just right. I'll send you a few different tracks to see which you like best, or if you're not quite sure about any of them, I'll take your further input and try again. Usually it only takes one try, but I will continue working and taking input until you are fully satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to hear what some of the world's artists are up to. To have a glimpse into the huge diversity of music in the works, and then to play a part in bringing some of those projects to completion – that is a great honor.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Complete satisfaction or your money back. I always do my best to make sure my skillset covers your goals before beginning a job. But if I happen to wrong and agree to work with you despite not having the proper skills, I owe you a refund.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My piano sits in a warm-sounding living room, adjacent to a stairwell that has a surprisingly wonderful natural reverb. I have a collection of Cascade ribbon and condenser microphones that I use in combination – some close, some far – to achieve vibrant sounds. These run into a Zoom F8 recorder/interface, which has 8 clean mic preamps and up to 24bit/192kHz audio. At the center of it all is a Mac with Pro Tools 12, where I can make small edits or apply effects if your track calls for them.
