Interview with Obtusive Hyperplexer

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: GIK acoustic treatment, small home studio, condenser mic, ProTools 2018.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will work extra hard to make sure the song can compete with trending chart-toppers.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: RUSKO, Falco Benz, Comtron, Brynn Elliot, Demi Lovato, Penguin Prison, Moddi, Mayer Hawthorne, Muse, and Yelle

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: A new single and searching for other artists that want to collaborate.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being able to showcase new ideas for musical trends and techniques.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Do you have gear for post-processing? No analog, only plugins in my DAW.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: My writing process doesn't include picking out cookie-cutter hooks and loops that randomly puzzle piece together. Instead I write with best flow and transitions in mind so that song structure feels more natural and less robotic.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: How soon is deadline for song completion? Do you have PRO affiliation? Is reached agreement permanent or arbitrary?

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: Classically trained. Trumpet player in Marching band, Church orchestra, and private lessons. Now learning drums, piano, and singing.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Sophisticated, Alluring, entertaining, dance-worthy, modern, versatile, yet not too unpredictable

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Katy Perry because she's very talented.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Film scoring, Singer/Songwriter, Jazz, Pop, Rock, or EDM

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Melodic dictation meaning writing down musical topline melodies I hear in my head. Harmonizing and musical improvisation on guitar, piano, or drums.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I make sure the client and I agree on the artistic and stylistic qualities of the project. I think of the rhythm and groove first, then the chord progression, then the lyrics and melody on top of that. Of course I make a few changes along the way before a song is finished.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: A current Pop singer let me co-write inspire some of the lyrics to one of their songs. This was 2001, and the song was released a few years later. They were unsigned at the time, but then they became very successful. I'm proud that they at least offered to give me some credit and I had the opportunity to help them kickstart their career!

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: Digital because it's more affordable, however analog is more fun and interactive getting better results than emulation in digital.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Syncopation and dynamic range make any song really catchy with a hook to capture listener's attention

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I supply the creativity needed to guarantee your song fits the style or creative direction desired.

  37. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  38. A: Describe in detail the project's main focus stylistically.

  39. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  40. A: mic, audio interface, laptop, headphones, and a tuner

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Create a song from scratch if given a creative direction or goal to accomplish.
