Interview with Sarah May

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My upcoming single "It Fades Away"! Out July 9th!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I'm working on my own debut album. I was signed to indie record label "Last Night From Glasgow" in October of 2020 and they have been incredibly supportive of me and my artistry.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise to treat your song like it's a piece of you. Because it is.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love the chance to be creative and work in all kinds of styles of music as well as working with all kinds of people all around the world!

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: How long until I get my finished product? That depends on the song. If you want a breakup song but you hand me a messy beat I might ask you to get a producer to clean it up for you before I start working on it. As well you might not be happy with the lyrics the first time around. It depends on quite a few things.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That I can do everything! I don't mix or master and the people you're looking for to take on those tasks have been working on those skills for a very long time!

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What artists sound is this project inspired by? Is there an artist who you strive to sound like?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Take your time in choosing the right topliner/vocalist for you.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My laptop, microphone, headphones, audio interface, and sound shield.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been toplining for 5 years now and have been a vocalist for 2 years.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: My style is definitely alternative. Think haunting sweet vocals with dark hip hop beats.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Zedd or Calvin Harris

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Never scrap your bad dieas. They might be good ideas one day.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I release my own alternative pop music but I've written hip hop, rap, r&b, country and more.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My lyricism.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: My lyrics often paint the bigger picture. I enjoy exploring the human psyche and can write lyrics a listener can relate to. Storytelling is the most important part of a song in my opinion. My vocals are soft and small and have been described as "haunting".

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I get a beat or a piece of music and that's where I begin writing lyrics and vocal melodies. I typically take some time to let the artist in on what I'm working on and make revisions where necessary. I then record the lyrics with the vocal melody over the music to let the client know what the finished project will sound like and we can make more revisions again from there. If the client would like my vocals on the song I'll then record professionally and export the trackouts to be mixed and mastered.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: My own home studio with access to recording equipment and editing software.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I often write lyrics for near to finished beats or instrumentals as well as offer my vocals.
