Interview with Andrea Piombo
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When mixing or mastering, take an eq and cut everything below 20HZ. We can't hear frequencies that low and this will give you some extra room to push your master without lifting all the rumble and dirty that you might have there. You can apply the same process at frequencies above 20KHz.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I keep it very basic and simple: IMac, MacBook Pro15, Studio Monitors HS7 and Krk 5 for reference, 49 keys keyboard, Maschine, Sennheiser 650HD. When comes to mixing and mastering i do it in the box: FabFilter plugins, Acustica Audio plugins and Waves are my favourite. When producing, i have Komplete and i use a lot of Kontakt, Nexus but also high quality audio samples.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The track is called Hide & Seek by Mark Mendy. Me and the artist know each other for a few years now and i'm proud of it because the track reached over 1 MILLION views/streams in just a few months and i've been inside the project nearly at 360. My main role was obviously mixing it, which took a long time, but worth.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A lot of mixes and masters for a record label (Pop Music mostly) and producing a really talented NY based rapper. Then selling beats here and there online and locally.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Matt Foster ( if you have the budget )
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Because nowadays you can have a "full studio" just in your laptop and achieve great results. (Im a fan of analogue too though)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That they will be happy with the results.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That i can work from everywhere i want
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What's your price for beats? How much for mix and master? So i mostly drive them to my profile where they can read all the prices and infos.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I feel like most artists (mostly independent ones) don't see the work that there is behind a mix or a production.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If they have any reference to show me before starting to work.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a little chat before to explain your project but without "wasting" their/our time and ask for some recent projects they /we have worked on.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, Sennheiser 650HD, External Hard Drive with my plugins and sounds, midi keyboard.. i guess i don't need much else.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: So, i studied music production and sound engineering in London and graduated in 2015, but by then i was already recording artists and mixing their track. In the last year i also had a "Advance Mixing Course" with the engineer Matt Foster (Tinie Tempah, The Prodigy, Wiz Khalifa, Katy B, Nadia Rose and so on..). Then i simply continued to mix for artists and start to sell instrumentals to rappers and singers. In 2017 i started to do masters as well, not only on the tracks i was producing and/or mixing but as a paid master engineer and since then i never stopped.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versatile
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: As a mix or master engineer i would love to work with James Arthur and Drake. As a beat maker / producer i would love to work with Eminem, Dappy, Royce 5'9'
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly Pop, Chill pop or Rap.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Time management. I can always finish a project on time with the client happy.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity and a clean sound
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If i need to mix or master a track i first give it a full listen to get a vibe, then, if i have the stems, i bring the volumes down and i start balancing the sounds to then eq and compress when needed and finish with effect and space processing. When it comes to producing, i mostly get references from the artist it self so i put my hands on the keyboard and start with melodies then drums.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Always been inspired by Hip Hop legends like Dr. Dre and Timbaland and engineering wise i really like Tony Maserati.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly mixing & mastering for record labels and independent artists who need high quality and a professional sound. Then also producing full instrumentals or beats for rappers.
