Interview with Wassily G.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Out of music producers, I love Tainy, Alizz, Ian Kirkpatrick, Tommy Brown...
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A piano, my laptop, a mic (I use the AT 5040 btw) some speakers (Adam A7X)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Whats your vocal mixing chain? Whats your mastering chain? Can't tell you here, but train your ears and you'll be able to master with a potato :)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I guess my production on EXO - Walk on memories. It was one of my first days of internship in the studio of Albi Albertsson, I was by myself, jammed a little on the piano, recorded it on my phone and turned it into the beat. Also the production has a couple cool chord changes and modulations. This thing ended up selling multi platinum, I think it's crazy that such a casual phone recording can make people sing in sold out arenas a couple of years later.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a lot of Latin/Reggaeton stuff at the moment.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Nathalie Q https://soundbetter.com/profiles/173540-nathalie-q go hire her if you need great female vocals!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Record analog, edit and mix digitally. Both are fun: analog is life, digital is beyond.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won't stop till you're happy
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The music and the people. Such a universe full of discoveries and inspiration, the best reason to breathe.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I guess I'm not as technical as people think. I like to follow my heart (and ears).
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision, what sound are you going for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have some references for me to listen to! This gives me a better idea of what you're going for
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a piano creature since I could walk. Songwriting came at around 14, producing at maybe 15. I've also been studying music production, and having fantastic producer mentors like Crada (Drake, Alicia Keys, Kid Kudi) and Albi Albertsson (EXO, Twice, GG and all of Asia)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Tasty urbanesque.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ariana Grande because she's got a fantastic voice, and Rosalía because she's such an artist.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If it feels good, do it. (also valuable in other things in life I guess ;)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on anything that is Urban. This can range from Pop to Hip Hop to K-Pop to EDM, currently I'm focused on Latin music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Harmony, melody and speed.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to be innovative, always trying to include some fresh sounds.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I love to get to know my client and their vision. If this is understood, the rest flows quickly.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It's all in the box :)
