Baz Rovo - Audio Productions on SoundBetter

In your face, label quality mixes. If you’re not happy, we’re not done!

In 2021 I received the Gold Standard Pin from Hardcore Music Studio run by Jordan Valeriote (Silverstein, Neck Deep, Counterparts...), branding my works competitive with releases by industry Professionals. I have since setup my home studio offering recordings and mixing. My studio consists of a fully isolated live room with a full monitoring setup and a control station with top of the range recording equipment.
In the end of 2021, I won the HCMS mixing contest that I’m really proud of!

Interview with Baz Rovo - Audio Productions

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: Depending on the project. If I have never worked with the client always have a pre meeting to discuss their image, what they wanna achieve (if possible I go to one of their rehearsals to have a listen how they actually sound like). Always ask a reference track in advance (if it’s their last record or someone else’s doesn’t really matter). I stick to dates, is really important to me to give a plan to the client as, …. recording dates, dates I’m mixing on, date of the final project being delivered. Rarely been asked for more than one revisions! When the mix is done on my end I give a few days to the band to have a deep listen and I ask 1 list of revision notes from the entire band. I normally fix it the same day and the project can go for mastering. I do not master my own mixes!

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Recorded and mixed a single for a band called Black Wendy a few months ago ( song hasn’t been released yet) and won an award in the Pps course (gold standard pin), that means industry professionals described this project as competitive with professional releases. It was a really important milestone in my journey.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Finally have some time to remix a few old songs of mine.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Unfortunately not at the moment.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Digital, with some analog extensions. Nowadays digital sound quality is fantastic, sold analog gears after I started working with the UAD Apollo 8p. I just didn’t need them anymore.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise professional service no matter what!

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Helping artists to crate songs out of their emotions, imaginations, and see their faces when they’re listening the final product.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Do you master the songs as well? No I do not master my own mixes, however have connections with professional mastering engineers I normally send my mixes to.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Some people thinks we’re becoming friends along the way (which certainly could happen) and will give them a cheap service, unfortunately can’t do that.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Have you ever been working with someone who nailed your sound?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: If you hire me, you hired me for a reason! Do not try to cut corners, I want the best for your music.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Definitely my ears, think gears are overrated nowadays, as a professional must be able to produce very similar results everywhere with anything available.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I started getting familiar with recording and mixing 10+ years ago, however I was just recording myself and friends for a long period of time. It was more about learning how to use DAW systems rather then recording and mixing professionally. In the last year I finally finished building my studio, completed a high quality course, called Pro Production System made by Jordan Valeriote. Started working professionally as a recording, mixing and live sound engineer about 6 months ago with a great results.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: I like aggressive, in your face mixes, hope my uploaded song points this out well!

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: If I could say what my dream would be, I’d say My Chemical Romance and The Used! Their music gave me so much since I was younger. Definitely my favorite two bands all time!

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Never want to fix something after recording, the recoded material must sound like the band straight of the bat, mixing is enhancing not replacing the sound you’ve got!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Any kind of Rock, alternative and punk rocks are my favorites!

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Bringing the best out of musicians.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: My standards are very high, I can provide label quality mixes in every circumstances! However if the recorded material does not make it possible, we need to have a discussion with the artist what the options are.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40.
