Interview with Johannes Felscher
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The Painter by Tobias Meinhart. An NYC-based saxophonist with great music, an all-star band. I was lucky to produce, record, mix and master the record. We tracked at legendary Sear Sound (Studio A) and I am very proud of how the record turned out.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A full-length album with a well-known producer and pianist from Singapore. Two singles out as of now, album release on Feb 17, 2023. Also some Jazz and opera productions for Juilliard School in NYC.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Decidedly both. Digital because it makes all the sense for convenience, recall / revision, consistency, analog because it's more sensual and things fall into place much faster. Also who doesn't like warm, glowing things?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will be 100% invested in giving you the best I can, no phoning-it-in when working with me.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I have been obsessed with music - performing, production, composing - since my childhood. There is nothing more meaningful for me than making a track come to life and start breathing.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "What is your rate for XYZ" - "Tell me more about your project: style, how was it recorded / produced, how many tracks, deadline, indie vs. major label..."
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Ask all the questions you have, be upfront about what you are certain about as much as what you are uncertain about. We're in this together, it's always a group effort, a summit of aesthetic preferences. I'll take care of the technical details, so no need to worry about those!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A Mac Studio with Pro Tools Neve 33609 Neumann KH310 LA-2A Neumann U67
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off producing EDM / Techno / Psychedelic Trance at age 12, by age 16 I was in a Black Metal band and also recording bands at a local studio. Attended multiple world-class institutions such as Conservatory of Amsterdam and Manhattan School of Music, freelance musician and producer in NYC for over 12 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm aiming to join obsessive attention to detail with sonic attitude.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: D'Angelo - the GOAT
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Invest in your listening environment. It's like therapy for your ears, the more you are able to understand, the more deliberate your decisions will be.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A wide range of styles really. R'n'B, Alternative, Jazz, Classical
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Total identification with each project. Everybody likes to be done quickly, but if I sense it's not done yet I will keep working until it feels right.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The musical sensibility and technical knowledge of 25+ years of musical production and performance skills.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Hybrid mixing and mastering setup in a tuned room. Outboard gear by API, Mäag Audio, Rupert Neve Designs, Wes Audio, Universal Audio and many more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Too many to list here - and too many different directions to put one before the other
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and mastering across all kinds of genres, studio and location recording, audio-post production for video and broadcast. Also a wizard-level audio editing and RX.
