Sean Kenney on SoundBetter

I’ve had the privilege of contributing to projects for artists like Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town, and Umphrey’s McGee while working alongside some of the world’s top engineers. These experiences have been invaluable, and I’m thrilled to now bring that expertise to my own work.

Hi, I’m Sean! After spending a decade engineering for producers and musicians in the vibrant LA and Nashville music scenes, I’ve honed the skills to bring your music to life—making it leap out of the speakers. Whether it’s punk, indie rock, folk, or anything in between, I’m passionate about capturing your unique sound and vision.

My goal is simple: to make sure you’re absolutely thrilled with the music you’re putting into the world. I believe music is a collaborative art form, and together, we can create something truly special. After all, a rising tide lifts all boats—let’s make waves together!

Interview with Sean Kenney

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: One of my favorite production tips I’ve picked up over the years is that it’s all about what you ~don’t~ play. This especially applies to bass. Nothing hits harder than when the bass breathes, pulls back, and then comes back in strong—BOOM, you feel it in your chest.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: My strongest skill is balancing the mix. It’s one thing to make individual elements sound great, but it’s another to make them work together harmoniously. I love this part of mixing—creating a sense of unity where every instrument feels like it belongs in the same world, whatever that world may be.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: A typical mixing session begins with setting up the session—color coding, routing, and organizing everything. I start by finding an initial balance and carefully listening to the rough mix—the version you’ve been living with and first fell in love with. My goal is to enhance and bring it to life while staying true to your vision. Of course, if you’re looking for a complete transformation, I’m all in—let’s change it! Once I’m familiar with the session and rough mix, the real work begins. Mixing is followed by the most crucial step: automation. This is where I fine-tune every element, ensuring it sits perfectly in the mix at all times. By taking this meticulous approach, I maximize vibe bringing your song to its full potential at every moment.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I mix entirely in the box because the ability to quickly recall and make changes outweighs the benefits of the analog domain. Using a control surface for initial balance and automation keeps me hands-on with the music, allowing for a tactile connection. I’m a firm believer that the advantages of digital far surpass its drawbacks.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I’ve always been inspired by drums and bass. There’s something powerful about how you can physically feel their sound in your chest—it resonates with me on a deep level.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Mixing, Mixing, Mixing! I love bringing songs to life, no matter where or how they were recorded. While professionally recorded tracks make the process smoother, I take pride in making home studio recordings shine and leap out of the speakers.
