Jon Smeathers is a Hobart based mixing & mastering engineer. With over 10 years in the music industry, Jon brings a hybrid of analog, digital & modified audio processors to create cutting edge records & audio productions. Jon specialises in mastering hip hop, pop, jazz & experimental music forms. Jon has an extensive cv as a performer, audio engineer, acoustic consultant, record label owner & DJ.

Jon applies his rigorous concepts of mixing & mastering to various other platforms including sound design, film scoring, sound installations and acoustic design & treatment.

Central to Jon’s work is the ability to afford clients to have their music survive beyond its immediate temporal interest. A lot of music doesn’t find an audience immediately, it may take several generations before the listening audience catches up to the artistic potential of a band, in their prime, a band that may not exist anymore and will have only left behind sound recordings. It is Jon’s belief that the engineer has a heavy obligation to their clients to make a recording that can survive potentially long enough for them to find an audience and to find their cultural significance. In light of this, Jon is interested in working with the Tasmanian community, a rich and fertile yet relatively undiscovered scene, to gain traction and document its radical sonic shifts.
