Interview with Michael Evan Moore

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I've been uploading quite a bit to YouTube lately, and am very proud of my recent releases. Composer, audio engineer, videographer/editor; basically everything!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Working on releasing my own music at the moment!

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: What's your turn around time? - It depends on the project, but for smaller projects, I would say no more then a week, but bigger projects with more revisions would require at up to a month. What do I need to provide you with to get started? - Stems, stems, stems! Make them dry of course, but if you want a specific reverb, let me know, because I might already own it!

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have been playing piano and have had an interest in music from a young age. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I began learning Classical piano. When I got into college, I studied Music Composition with an emphasis in Commercial Music, and found an even deeper passion for media music, specifically Film Scoring. Last year I finished studying film scoring at UCLA. Hopefully having gained enough experience that will kickstart my career in the field. In total, I have been composing for over 9 years now, and mixing throughout the years.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Digital! I've tried to go the analog route, but I find my efforts being more in the box; as well as their being minute difference with the quality of plugins nowadays. If I could and I had 50k, I totally would try analog! 500 series is the closest I would probably go if I were to try analog.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I will provide you with my BEST work, with customer satisfaction guaranteed.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love making original music, as well as making people look good by the mixes I can provide.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Music creation and mixing isn't simply throwing a bunch of things together and export/send. There is a TON of time and preparation to make sure every track I complete is at it's highest quality and something I am proud to have worked on.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What story are you trying to tell through this? (You'd be surprised how this even applies when I'm mixing)

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Ask a lot of questions and make sure you know what you are asking for up-front, so there is no confusion down the line.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Roland FP60X, my studio desk, a solar panel (with an extremely high voltage to power everything), my macbook pro, an Apollo Twin X Quad, and some Beyerdynamic headphones.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My piano music sits in the "easy-listening" and "neo-classical" genres. When it comes to my orchestral music, I would say it would fit in the "soundtrack" genre, or in some cases "Epic Music" genre.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I'd love to work with Audiomachine! I love their soundtracks, and their form really influences a lot of my soundtrack music!

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Always gain-stage your plugins. Even if we don't live in the 20th century, it's still a great rule to live by to make sure your tracks are honest on the master fader!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on cinematic music, but I tend to float to "singer/songwriter" when a mix or recording session is needed.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I have several "strongest" skills, but if I had to choose one, I would say I'm a great composer and have an ear for mixing!

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a lifetime of creativity and originality to your music. I help you tell your story.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: If it's a composition, I start in either a blank Logic project, or a specialized template, and start writing ideas! I try to find out exactly what the creative direction is of the client, and head that way with my score. If it's mixing, I start by listening back the track, analyzing key points that need some attention, and begin working on levels, as well as effects, etc. I do my best to listen through different sources, and also provide a "master-ready" mix that (hopefully) will blow your mastering engineers socks off!

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I currently am rocking an UA Apollo X8 in my studio, as well as an Roland FP-60x piano. I currently am mixing with JBL LSR205's for monitors, and for headphones, I have both Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's, and Audio Technica M50x headphones. For broadcasting, I use a Shure MV7 dynamic microphone.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Hanz Zimmer, John Williams, Yiruma, Peter Bence, The Piano Guys

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I primarily compose scores for clients, and mix their work, among other things, but I try to focus on that!
