Interview with LeRome Swiss
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly record vocals for my clients. I record other artists who need a recording studio to record their music in. I lay down backgrounds if needed. I do top lines to get the best melody idea to create a song. I write lyrics for clients and lay down references for another artist. Or as a featuring I write my own lyrics, lay down the vocals and create the best possible version of a song. I also edit vocals, I do vocal comping, vocal tuning and do pre edits for other artists to get a clean version ready for a professional mix.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Artists like Kaskade, Childish Gambino, The Weekend, Maroon 5, a lot of creative minds who are breaking out of the box they are put in to create their own unique style. Also artists that don't limit their talents by doing multiple things in music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It is a studio that fits three people comfortably. There is a soundproof recording booth. There are two microphones available depending on the users preference, the Rode NTK and the TLM 103. The Mac computer runs ultra fast for a great performance while recording and editing vocals. The programs that I mainly run is Logic Pro X but if preferred we can run the new Pro Tools as well. I have pretty much all of the plugins that there are. All the waves plugins, the full Komplete package, Antares for vocal tuning etc. There are two Yamaha speakers and a Sony sub. Everything is ran through the Behringer Control 2 interface. It's also a nice setup where you can work without any distractions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I figure out what the project is first. Depending on the project usually we will have to find the perfect melody for the song if there isn't already one. Make sure the lyrics are tight. Then start the recording process. Get as many good tracks recorded as possible and fuze them into one main track. After that record the background vocals, dubs, melodies, and everything to make the song bigger.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my knowledge of how a professional song should sound to the table. My father Eddie "Gypsy" Stokes is a producer who has worked for Dr. Dre, Akon, India Arie, Anthony David and many other famous artists. Through him I got to see what a song needs to sound like and what tools you use to make it happen.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My voice and my ear. I can hear if somethings sounds right or not right away. I can also immediately show the artist what they should sing if needed and help them along the recording process.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soul, r&b which is my core and I infuse that into electronic music as well. I don't limit myself in genres. Every music puts you in a different zone.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Yes, make sure once the project is towards the end that your levels are loud enough so it doesn't bounce out too quiet. Take your time and don't rush the process. Every song is it's own masterpiece.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Childish Gambino, because he is creative in everything he does. He doesn't only sing he also raps, does poetry and much more, so he has never been limited in what he does and his music is amazing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style in singing is soul, r&b, and also electronic music. I produce progressive trance and deep house.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am a swiss singer and songwriter, producer and music brought me to LA from Zürich about 7 months ago. I've been doing this for over 10 years and will never stop since it's my passion and dream to continue working on music in all kinds of ways.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mac book pro with all the music programs Duet by Apogee TLM 103 microphone Boss RC 505 Loopstation EV bluetooth speakers with solar panels converter to power it all up.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's work as long as you have a clear project in mind and can describe the service you'd like provided. I am very open minded and we can adjust to the customers needs.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is it you would like me to do? What is your goal of the project? How big is the project? What is a reference song? So I have an idea of what you are expecting. How many sessions are you trying to have? What is the end goal? Let's work!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The thought that I only do one thing in music. Where as music is so widely spread that I do production, songwriting, editing and the recording. I don't like any limits.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long will it take? It depends on the size of the project When will it be done? Once it all sounds perfect on multiple different speakers How many sessions for one song? It depends on the artist singing / rapping. Usually not more then two sessions. One session if the singer or rapper is on point with everything. Can you fix my voice? Yes I can Can you give me the full session in files? Yes I can, bring a harddrive, or wetransfer if it's less that 2GB of data. Can you mix the track as well? I usually only edit vocals and get a clean raw file ready for the mix. I can however get a great mix done as a reference. I can also provide the producer for a professional mix and mastering.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The creative aspect. Meaning creating toplines for people and writing lyrics with the melodies provided.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will get the best sound out of you and will create a professional sound with your music!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog and digital. Two different sounds that are each unique in its one way.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Mega a producer who I've worked with and who also recommended me to join SoundBetter.com
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Various different projects with @AriusOfficial @KennedyJones @Justmega @Cr3on @DJLuneytunez and many more.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I finished a brand new song with @ZoniiWorld that got signed & will be on edm.com and bpm radio.
