Victor was a great pleasure to work with. His recording and producing made the mix that much easier. Highly recommend.
I’ve worked with Victor in several projects and he’s an amazing engineer. Ever since I started working with him two years ago, I haven’t gone to any other engineer to mix/master my songs. He goes above and beyond to make sure the artist is satisfied with the end result. Working with him is always a pleasure!
Victor is great! I should say, easily of the best mixer/master engineer I have worked with!
The best mixer that we have ! almost all music that i produce i call him to mix
Victor is an amazing recording and mixing engineer that I had the pleasure to work with. Highly gifted and skilled, with a solid music background.
Interview with Victor Nery
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The album "Amor É Fuga: Fuja" by Nina Fernandes! Mixing is my main gig, but that was the first album I produced! I produced that one with Nina and another great producer from Brazil called Tó Brandileone! That record holds a very special place in my heart, I love the songs, the sounds, absolutely everything about it! A mixing project I love is "Kintsugi", a 6-song EP by Mariana Cavanellas. Amazing production, and I came up with 90% of the effects, so that was really fun! If you listen to it, you'll hear that I didn't hold back on the delays! 😂
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will put 110% of my heart and soul onto their projects. And I will listen to them, always. Almost always, beautiful stuff come out of that!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The feeling when the client loves the mix and you feel like you really helped them get their art across.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Well, since I mostly mix in the box, I will list 5 plug-ins that I think are essencial for my process. I could probably mix a song with only these 5, and it wouldn’t be a big deal: FabFilter Pro-Q3, Waves RCompressor, Valhalla Vintage Verb, Soundtoys Echoboy and Soundtoys Devil-Loc Deluxe.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started mixing in 2016, and of course, I had no ideia what I was doing. But I did know I loved doing it! Since then, I dedicated my life for this craft! Graduated in a 2-year audio engineering program in Brazil, then went abroad for another 2 years in LA where I graduated at Musicians Institute. Along the way I made some incredible friends, worked on awesome music and I cannot wait for what's to come!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be open-minded. We live in a digital era, you can always do a "Save As" of your session, go absolutely nuts, and if you find out it's not working, just go back to the old session. I never say "no" to a client's request. I will always try the suggestion, and I will certainly voice my opinion if I don't agree with the change. But there's absolutely no reason for me not to try it in the first place. That will create good trust bonds with clients.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening to the artist. Actually taking attention to what they do and don’t like, the vibe they are going for with the sound and going for it. I would also say creativity, specially with effects. Clients always comment on the reverbs and delays I come up with.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring every single hour I've spent over the last 6 years studying and perfecting my craft, a lot of passion for music, and the most important: I bring the mission of wanting the artist to feel fulfilled and satisfied, knowing that their song/album is sounding just like how they wanted it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Before mixing starts, I think it's essential for me to call or personally meet with the artist to talk about the production, what's the vibe that he/she was aiming for, what are the references, etc. I think a song is like a child, and it makes no sense for me to become the new sitter without having a really special talk to the parents. And I love hearing about the story behind the lyrics, and what type of emotion the song is conveying. This definitely helps on setting the right path before mixing. Then, it's time to really focus and get the emotional impact of the song happening. Because that's mixing for me: bringing out the intended sensations and emotions. A mix can sound perfect, but if doesn’t give you the goosebumps, it's not there yet.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm currently mixing on a MacBook 2020 with M1 chips, a pair of Neumann KH120's, an Apollo Twin X and a Avid Artist Mix fader controller!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Tchad Blake, Jaycen Joshua, Tom Elmhirst, Josh Gudwin, Jon Castelli, Rick Rubin, Mike Dean, Ethan Gruska, Manny Marroquin... just to name a few!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My main gig is mixing and mastering! I mix out of my own room here in São Paulo. I also do a lot of recording, specially assisting other engineers!
