Interview with Stefano B.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m particularly proud of was a collaboration with a hip-hop artist where I contributed both saxophone lines and production. The project had a unique blend of smooth jazz melodies with strong, groovy beats. My role was to write and perform the sax lines, as well as add some arrangement elements to give the track a fuller sound. The final result turned out exactly how we envisioned, and it’s always great to hear how well it resonated with listeners.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on a series of original tracks that blend jazz, funk, and hip-hop, with some of my own compositions and arrangements. I’m also collaborating with a local artist on a commercial project.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I appreciate both, but I lean towards digital for the flexibility and precision it offers in modern music production. That said, I still use analog gear where it makes sense to add warmth and character to a track.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to deliver high-quality, professional work that aligns with your vision. I’ll always be communicative, reliable, and dedicated to bringing the best out of every project.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love the creative process and the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians. Every project is unique, and it’s exciting to bring new ideas to life, whether I’m laying down a saxophone track or helping shape the overall sound.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: The biggest misconception is that improvisation isn’t thought out or structured. In reality, improvisation takes a lot of skill and planning to create something that sounds both spontaneous and cohesive.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I usually ask about the overall vibe of the project, the specific elements they’re looking for (e.g., saxophone, arrangement, beat), and any reference tracks they have in mind.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: My advice would be to communicate your vision clearly and trust the process. Music is collaborative, and when we’re on the same page, we can create something amazing together.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Saxophone – essential for my craft. Ableton Live – for music production. Focusrite Scarlett interface – to capture clean recordings. Nord Stage 3 – my go-to keyboard for versatility. Portable solar charger – to power everything!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I’ve been playing music for 15 years, starting with classical piano and quickly branching out into jazz and contemporary music. I’ve played in multiple bands across Italy, the UK, and France, and have collaborated with many artists and producers in various genres.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I’d describe my style as versatile and groove-driven. I love mixing jazz improvisation with funk and hip-hop influences, creating something that feels both fresh and timeless.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I’d love to work with Anderson .Paak because of his incredible ability to blend soul, funk, and hip-hop seamlessly. His music is vibrant and full of life, and I think I could bring something unique to his sound.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: One tip I always give is to leave space in your track. It’s easy to overfill with too many elements, but the best songs often have room to breathe, letting the groove and melodies shine.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I work across a wide range of styles, but I particularly enjoy funk, jazz, pop, hip-hop, and video game music (VGM). I’m flexible and able to adapt to whatever genre a client needs.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Improvisation is my strongest skill. Whether it’s jazz, funk, or hip-hop, I can adapt quickly to any style and add a personal touch that elevates the overall sound.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring a unique mix of improvisation, groove, and genre-blending. Whether it's adding a soulful saxophone line, a jazzy chord progression, or a funky bass groove, I always aim to enhance the emotion and vibe of the song.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I start by listening to the track and discussing with the client to understand their vision. Then, I lay down some basic ideas, whether it's a saxophone melody, beat, or arrangement. After that, I fine-tune the performance, record multiple takes if necessary, and deliver the final product after mixing it into the track.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: My studio features a mix of analog warmth and digital precision. I use a Focusrite Scarlett interface, Ableton Live for production, and Yamaha HS8 monitors for mixing. I also have a range of saxophones, synthesizers, and a Nord Stage 3 for keyboard work, which allows me to create diverse sounds.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I draw inspiration from John Coltrane for his innovative jazz improvisation, Maceo Parker for his energetic funk sax playing, and J Dilla for his genius in hip-hop production. These artists push boundaries, and I strive to do the same in my work.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I typically work on creating custom saxophone lines, arrangements, and beats for artists across various genres. From jazz solos to funk grooves and hip-hop hooks, I tailor my contributions to fit the artist's vision.
