Interview with Jesse Melito
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently mixing an 8 song album for a very "Iron Maiden" style rock/metal band
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Keep it simple. In many cases, less is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Funk, and Pop usually. Pretty much anything groovy
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an old school approach with todays ears. I love the lush warm sound of the records from the 60s and 70s but want my projects to have that big, loud, and radio friendly sound for today. My goal is always finding that sweet spot between the two.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The studio is 1,200 square feet with tall 15 foot ceilings. The walls are treated acoustically with varying reflective or absorptive materials so it has a nice open sound with out being too "live" feeling. The wall treatment is on a cleating system and can be moved anywhere through out the live room, so if a section needs to be more "dead" for certain recordings we just move some panels around. It really is the best of both recording worlds. The control room is also treated and open from the live room making it very simple to move mics around during recording and communicate with the artists. It houses a 36 channel Euphonix recording console as well as outboard preamps, dynamics, and effect processors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have always been inspired by the work of Eddie Kramer, especially for his work with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. If we look at Led Zeppelin II for example, there is this wonderful sense of "space" to his work that helps create this atmosphere of you're in the room with the band. Also, these recordings consist of mostly 3 or 4 piece bands yet they sound so dense and full of character, with out it feeling cluttered.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly Recording, Mixing, and Production.
